Under normal circumstances I would agree with you 100%. But this isn't a case of a service being cut and those costs being pocketed at the guest's expense. These are exceptional times and this is simply the level of service WDW can provide at the costs they are charging. For the entitled people??? For the price of a Disney hotel room, I don't expect to have to make my own bed while on vacation.
No, it's called refunding you for something you paid for and didn't get. Housekeeping costs are factored into the price of the room.
Housekeeping falls into the category of Amenity. Like ice machines, shampoo, or a pool. They are part of the value of the resort you pay for but the hotel always reserves the right to alter them if needed. Like if someone fouls the pool they can shut it down for sanitation without having to refund everyone at the hotel some portion of their bill. Disney happens to be better at preserving the resort experience than most places but they are not required to make amends to guests if incidental extras happen to be unavailable for some reason. Especially if they let you know this is the case when you book the room. You most certainly pay for housekeeping. They don’t do it for free. The cost is factored into the price. It doesn’t have to be itemized.
From what I heard when I adjusted my reservation, the gift card option may be available if you forgo housekeeping altogether but not if you accept the every other day light cleaning. But the status of the program going forward is not set in stone.
