Can you swim and play in the sand?
Which resort has the best beach for this?
Are they open to all resort guest or just guest staying at that particular resort?

You can play in the sand and at the very most, put your tootsies in the water. There's too much bacteria in the water from the boat for anyone to be 100% sure you are going to not pick up a germ. And if anyone picks up a germ and becomes sick and sues Disney........

Beach facilities are intended for that resort's guests only.

There are several resorts that have good beaches - obviously, the Caribbean Beach and the Beach Club and Yacht Club but the Polynesian and the Swan are also nice.

You cannot swim. There is bacteria in the water and I've heard there is the occasional alligator as well.

I think anyone can walk or play on the beach, you do not have to be a resort guest.

In march of 07 we stayed at the Poly and there were TONS of cigarette buts in the sand and my toddler kept trying to eat them. And I mean like every bucket of sand there were maybe 6 cigarette butts. So I don't really recommend letting very young children play in the sand. It was unbelievably disgusting. They do clean the beach every day with a rake, but not something that could pick up cigarette buts. I guess beaches look like ashtrays to way more people than I ever imagined. It is really too bad that smokers had to ruin the beach.

As the previous poster mentioned, there is a very nasty bacteria that lives in lakes in Florida. If you should happen to get it up your nose, it can cause an illness similar to encephalitis. It is almost always fatal. Just last year, several children in the Orlando area died from this bacteria. Swim in the pools. It isn't worth taking the chance.

Wow, that's pretty gross. I've never seen a cig butt on the Poly beach. I'm certainly not doubting your story though. Maybe there were some chain smokers on the beach watching Wishes the night before! Maybe that morning raking just covers them with some sand until someone digs them up. Yuk!

Amoebic Encephalitis.
Amoeba that thrives in sediment of freshwater lakes and ponds when the water gets above 80F. Dipping your feet in is one thing, swimming unattended is another.:confused3 As someone else mentioned, there is the occasional alligator.
In hot water.

There are many signs saying not to swim but everyday at the Polynesian last month there were always a dozen kids or more in the water :crazy2: We saw a guy in a boat come by and tell them to get out once (like in the picture above) but 5 minutes after he left they all headed back into the water.:confused3
The beach was pretty nice though on this trip, not too much trash or butts.

While we were staying at the Coronado Springs Resort, we watched them pull a 6 foot alligator out of the lake. That cured ANY desire to swim in the lake. As others have said, swim in the pools, they are much nicer than the lakes anyway.
