Resizing Pictures

Okay, so I'm taking photos in RAW format and I've been editing them just for sharpening and some level adjustment. I'm getting ready to put some images on a cd/dvd for a friend and these pictures are coming in at 3900x2613 pixels and huge print size in inches. What should I be resizing these pictures to for my friend to be able to print them without problems? Also, would I just resize the image when I edit and save it to jpeg, or is there another method?

The resolution is fine...leave that alone. The DPI controls the "print size" and can always be changed. For example...if you set it to 300 you will get a print size of 13" x 9". If you want a 4 x 6 you would just change the DPI value. Really, it shouldn't matter to your friend. he/she should be able to take the picture in whatever application they choose to print from and change the print size to whatever they want.

I responded to your other post, please feel free to ask any more specific questions. I find I get better and better with PP the more I do it. I go back to some older images and realize how far off my editing was...or maybe I'm just more picky

I saw the response and thank you! I've been using UFRaw before sending into GIMP, basically because it is all free. I haven't really done anything in UFRaw except set up a linear curve that I like and then adjust for white balance if needed.

I'm going to ask my friend if it would be okay for me to upload some images to help me get some critiques and criticisms on what I could and couldn't do to pictures in post processing.

That'd be good...and if you can upload a couple RAW files you are particularly interested about to www.mediafire.com we can actually open them and see what can be done.

I'm using the D3000. I've had some buyers guilt over not getting the D5000(got my camera back in October), but I think I'm still okay with the D3000 and won't miss anything by not having the D5000.

Just was seeing if you had a Canon as it comes with a full RAW editor. Might be worth buying Lightroom in the future though.
