Reservations about FW cabins

We have an 8 night reservation using a free dining pin code offer for late October--planning on staying at the FW cabins. Historically, we've always stayed in a moderate resort, but this will be our first time traveling as a family of four rather than as a couple or family of three. The kids will have just turned one and three. We drive down so have our own car. We never use Disney transportation. I just can't bring myself to stand around waiting for buses to come and praying that I didn't just miss one, so we always just drive to the parks. We never mind walking all over the resorts because we do A LOT of walking where we live anyway.

I'm a bit concerned about staying at the FW cabins because we won't have the option to drive within the campgrounds to the marina or the restaurants or pools. I normally wouldn't mind walking, but are the campgrounds significantly larger or harder to get around than a moderate resort? I know we can rent a golf cart, but the thought of shelling out an extra $500 just to get around our resort seems insane. I was initially excited by the thought of taking the boat to MK, but waiting 20 mins for an internal bus followed by a possible 20 minute wait at the marina just seems depressing.

Thoughts? Should I just change the reservation to somewhere else? I was looking forward to the cabins and simply having more room. Plus if it is relatively easy to walk the campgrounds, I do like the idea of having a very nature-y place to walk around and enjoy.

The cabins are really nice especially when you have a car. The buses work well inside the campground and there is a secondary pool and hot tub over by the cabins that you can walk too. I wouldn't change.

Many people (myself anyway) embrace the Fort Wilderness atmosphere and making connections is not that big of a deal. Internal transportation is usually quite good, but no doubt over 8 nights you would find a few occasions where a golf cart would come in handy. Walking most places isn't a great option time-wise if you are in one if the loops up front -- and might not be very pleasant if it's hot.

I wouldn't change your plan. The internal bus is good. We did rent a golf cart. It was rather expensive but our stay was only 4 days, it was worth it. The cabins are wonderful.

I had the same concerns you had when we made the decision to stay at the Cabins. We used our car most of the time, but found that the internal buses were fine for going to the marina or pools. We have stayed 3 times and I think you will enjoy the cabins with your young children. There is room for them to play without disturbing others and having your car just steps away from your door is wonderful.

One time we were close to a pool/laundry/bus stop so walking was easy to those. When we were too far to walk to the pool, we used the bus. One cabin we stayed at was quite a walk to the bus stop. It would not have been easy to carry laundry back and forth to the bus stop to catch a bus to the laundry area. There were a couple of parking spaces near the laundry facilities which we used. If we needed a few items from the Meadows store, I always found an available parking space, even though spaces are limited.

thanks for the input everyone. maybe we will just rent a cart for the last couple of days as we tire of the parks. any particular loop you would recommend if you don't have a golf cart? like I said, we really don't mind walking--walked all over CSR and POR with a stroller--but just want to make sure it's actually feasible to walk. are there walking trails that a heavy duty stroller could use?

There is a outside vendor called T-time for golf carts that's highly recommended on the camping forum at about half price of Disney, you might rent for the last half of your trip. Going to Mk would be easier by boat than driving and more fun. We usually use buses except for Epcot, Ak, and downtown Disney. Fw is a great resort with lots to do, I think you will enjoy it, we have stayed at all the others also over the years also..

Check out the map to be sure but I think we were in 2100?? It was a couple years back so not sure of the number, but it's fairly near 2 bus loops and pool although walk to pool was too far in July heat for my taste. Next time I would request near quiet pool if mid summer. I would probably get same loop if a less hot month.
