Resellers - a big deal?

Maybe I'm a doofus but are the resellers that crazy? I've seen pictures of people carrying bags and bags (some almost garbage size) of items, only to resell them on Ebay. I've never seen this in person, but has the world just gone topsy turvy? Or maybe I'm just lucky to not see such selfishness. And does Disney actually revoke AP of those people caught reselling?

Reselling is perfectly legal. Once you buy an item, the original seller has no say what you do with it. People make their living reselling on Ebay, legally.
Now, making your own Disney items and selling them, that would be illegal.
As for the AP situation, AP holders have a contract that specifies they not resell items because they get to buy merchandise at a discount. Otherwise Disney couldn't do a thing. They can't do a thing to stop non-AP holders from reselling

They spent $1,000 to make $5,000.
Sounds like a smart deal.

I agree with Sam, because there are people who would pay anything for a new or limited edition sweater or pin, this happens.

Reselling as a side hustle , second job, extra money for SAHM is not just a Disney thing. I've know people set up a small business reselling designer handbags. They buy them cheap at thrift shops or Ebay , fix a zip or clean them up and then sell them on their social media or website.

Many years ago I heard about people who go to thrift shops in the very wealthy areas of London specifically to buy all the designer clothes offloaded by the rich. Dresses which originally cost thousands, could be bought for a few hundred, and then resold.

Since Covid, there is a huge demand for Disney merchandise. Thousands of people for various reasons, many due to travel bans can not visit Disney Parks. Disney Stores are closing world wide. The USA park merchandise is not sold on shop Disney in Europe.

From reports from the UK staycation Disney Magic cruises , people were getting on the ship and waiting in line for 2 hours for the shops to open, on every cruise. The CM's could not restock every item for every cruise due to the demand, as they had to wait for merchandise to be shipped from USA. So merchandise sold out on one cruise may not be restocked in time for the next cruise.

Heck, there are people who would pay big bucks for a bottle of Disney sewer water. I’m surprised WDW hasn’t considered selling a 500 ml fancy decorated jar/bottle of the stuff for $30.

Maybe some people just don't understand that for the majority of people in America and around the world, going to a Disney park is something that will never happen and that the only way to get park merchandise is to buy it on Ebay or through the resellers social media. Disney fans and people who like Disney merchandise is not just limited to those who can physically get to a Disney Park.

I guess if you always had easy access to Disney Parks, especially during the last 2 years, it must be hard to comprehend that there is such huge demand for something that you take for granted you can get any time you want.

The pattern continues. People don't like to let others enjoy things that they don't like themselves.

If that's what they want to spend money on, that's up to them. I can still think it's a waste. I'm sure there's stuff I spend money on that you would never do yourself.

Who's trying to stop anyone? I think people get defensive a little too easily.

Saying it's not something you would do is one thing, but saying those who do are crazy is exactly what I said.

They're not crazy, the eBay people are. That says, it's so stinky Disney doesn't limit the number of items a person can buy BUT hey, they're a business and a sale is a sale.
50th merch is limited to 2 per item, per person. However, people can always go back in and buy more. Not sure how that could be limited practically.

But how would someone like me, who has been banned from entering USA by a Presidential Executive Order since March 2020 buy Disney Parks merchandise? Its not sold on Shop Disney Europe. The Ebay people who many people have such distain for , have seen a gap in the market and have seen the demand is there from people, so why is it wrong for them to take advantage of that demand??

Its like people are saying oh only people who go Disney Parks are allowed to own Disney Parks merchandise and if you can't get here then tough you miss out.

Oh not what I meant - sorry. I meant more like the eBay buyers who pay INSANE prices are crazy. Not regular eBay people. :)

but why?? Again thousands and thousand of people have been banned from entering USA since March 2020. Huge amounts of people have had to miss both their 2020 and 2021 Disney parks holidays and now have disposable income to spend, money that would have been spent on flights and Disney resorts. So now instead, they use this money to buy Disney parks merchandise on Ebay.

Huge amounts of people want Disney merchandise and have the money to spend but are unable to physically get to Disney parks. So why is it wrong for them to choose to spend their money on buying the 50th Anniversary merchandise on Ebay???

Ok. To each their own. Your money, your choice. Enjoy!

My issue is when I can't get the merchandise when I'm there at the parks, but Ebay sellers have it up for massive markups. If I am actually there, and I can't get the mug I want because ONE PERSON has bought 10, and had their family (including children who have zero interest in the mugs) buy 10 each....that is a problem.

Disney needs to enforce limits on items. Limit merchandise (minus candy/food) to two per person, period, no matter how many times they are in the park. Sure, that means the spouse can buy 2, and each kid can buy 2, but that still means they only get those 6 mugs, instead of the 12 or 18 or 24 (or 30 a day) they would get for going multiple days (or even multiple times in one day). That would mean that 3+ other families could get some as well, using that same situation for them.

And, yes, they can track it, and enforce it, especially the passholders. Target, Walmart, Kohls, etc. can track my orders and in store purchases made on my account or with my Red Card; Disney can absolutely do the same with APs...and I think they could with MagicBands/Tickets as well. You buy your two, the system locks you out from buying more.

It would take a bit of IT work and some time, but it would work. Sellers could have a bit of stuff to sell, and other people could actually acquire some of the items while they are still at the parks.

I think a lot of people are crazy. Those who camp out for tickets (to any event), those who camp out for "Black Friday Sales", those who camp out and pay thousands of dollars for the latest iPhone on Day 1, and yes, someone who is willing to pay insane markups for Disney merchandise are just some examples.

I understand why you want this but what would compel Disney to do it? Their only goal is to sell the stuff and that seems to be happening just fine without all the measures you mention. :confused3 Providing a better experience for some guests, all guests or any guests in particular really isn’t a priority, which has been proven time and again in recent years. The corporation cares nothing for whether you come away with the mug you want, especially given that most people likely still go ahead and buy something else instead.
