Just curious, as im fairly new to these boards and seeing these posts and negative comments everywhere.
What if the economy was very different and DVC wasnt adding inventory there by resale prices were actually higher then direct because there wasnt any direct to purchase. Much like condos or select home towns. Would the direct buyers still frown on resale, even though they purchased higher. Or would they welcome due to the fact they could see there purchase as an investment and hope the prices still go higher.
I guess what im trying to put across is who cares how we all became dvc members, we all are in it becuase of a shared sense of worth. Yes there are some , myself included that from time to time rent, but thats no different then letting my brother use it when im not there. Might actually be better for a renter then my brother since you dont know him.:rolleyes1

I can only speak for me, but as a general rule, no one cares how one became (or becomes) a DVC owner. I've bought both direct and resale, and I have never had an issue with anyone nor vice versa. In fact, unless one opts to tell how points were acquired, it's not common knowledge. That being said, should you decide to buy into DVC, please be aware that there are restrictions placed on resale buyers versus those who buy direct. I won't go into the restrictions here since a small amount of research on these boards will give you all the answers, but you should be aware of these before making any decision. Otherwise, just keep reading and evaluating subjective comments for what they're worth. There will always be negative and positive sides to any story, so take each with the proverbial grain of salt. Enjoy!

thanks Sleepy, we are days away from closing our first SSR contract, so I know about all the restrictions. I just wanted to put out a different feeling there, other then the ones where people are name calling resalers. If the tables were changed, and there is the chance in the future then maybe some direct would be so harsh. Thats all.

Sorry if you've been made to feel less worthy somehow for buying resale since that's just an ignorant sentiment. There seems to be more negativity surrounding the DIS than in times past, or at least folks appear to be more quickly annoyed than, say, five years ago. I know the mods do what they can to curtail it, but I'm sure that's akin to attempting to stop multiple leaks in a dam with nothing but one's fingers. ;)

I say congrats on your contract, and I hope DVC brings as much pleasure to you and yours as mine has to me. Let me know when you close, and I'll say a hearty, "Welcome Home!" :thumbsup2

I bought direct in 1999 and never had a problem with resales. I really don't see alot of negativity on this board about resales and it surprised me when it came up. More negativity about members renting.

Wow, I get the totally opposite vibe. I often get the impression that people consider us stupid for buying direct. At the time we bought(VGC) there were very few resale contracts as the resort had not yet sold out. To this date, there still aren't a ton of VGC resale contracts that would fit our needs. Just thought that I would pipe in and add my thoughts as a direct buyer.

Either way, Welcome Home!

This is the way that I feel. I bought direct to get exactly the number of points that I want, at the resort that I want, when I want them. To me, that was worth paying the premium but that does not align with the popular opinion on the DIS. I give anyone with the patience to wait out the right contract and then worry about getting through ROFR a virtual high five -- you definitely earned those savings, IMHO. I don't have the patience nor the desire to risk having the transaction pulled out from under me by Disney.

If there is someone who looks "down" upon those who buy resale, they need to figure out who it is that will buy their points should they need to sell. I doubt Disney will buy them all back! Resale buyers are a necessary component to this process and success of DVC and as stated before, unless you come out and say you did not buy direct from DVC, then no one will or can know how you bought. We have bought both ways and would not hesitate to buy a resale again.

Unless you intend to own your DVC short term, the purchase price does not make a very big difference in the investment. The bulk of the costs in the long run will be the maintainence fees.

we are days away from closing our first SSR contract,

Congratulations on your SSR resale contract!! Very smart move on your part. I don't think I have seen much 'snobbery" about direct vs resale.....like others have said, sentiment here seems to that people are foolish to buy direct. I have bought both direct and resale......points feel the same to me. Now, I feel like the people buying direct are foolish to spend $165pp for BLT when they can get it for nearly half the price buying resale. This would be a no-brainer.

We have 310 direct points, I'm not going to cruise on those points or use them to stay at a Disney hotel so certainly don't care about the restrictions on my 160 resale points.

Again, Congrats and Welcome!!

I doubt most members care but DVD does because of the lost potential retail sale.

What Bub said! I have always thought that this board leaned a little more to the resale side of things. I've seen many many times people post that they are considering buying direct... And fellow Dis'ers (myself included) come out of the woodwork to advise them (mostly against it). It's mostly out of concern for the purchaser, in my opinion, to make sure they realize all the variables and that they aren't just drunk on pixie dust.
100 points each at BWV & OKW... Both via resale.

welcome!
