Resale restrictions question

I currently have a friend thinking about a resale purchase and was picking my brain. I let her know all about the restrictions on resale purchases not getting the perks like AP discounts, and everything else. As a grandfathered resale buyer myself it got me thinking. We purchases shortly after the first resale restrictions were put in place. At the time, none of the "perks" of the those restrictions seemed like a loss to us. When the 2nd restrictions, and now the 75 point direct purchase restrictions member benefits has kicked in......I got a hypothetical scenario going in my head. The price that my current contract is selling for, I could make almost 50% more than what I originally paid. If I were to buy a resale contract of another resort......and then months later sell my original contract......would I retain the membership benefits, or would they take them away? I'm not actually considering this....just a curiosity question.

Why would one actually do this? Maybe changing home resorts would be of interest.....especially with the difference in prices on each resort.

I don’t know for sure but I imagine the perks are associated to the contract numbers, of which you must have at least one contract in a certain period.

I think if you did what you are suggesting you would eventually lose the perks.

I’m just guessing though

I agree with this.

I would say the same thing. Selling off something that entitles you to the perks would cause you to lose the benefits. The membership is what decides it and you will get a blue card based on the membership. If that membership is gone, then so will the card.

Bottom line though is deciding if the "perks" are truly worth having. DVD created the perks not to be nice but to drive people to buy direct. Do you really need to buy AP's or are you doing it because you can, do you really use them? The magic events are nice but you need to have a vacation scheduled when they are offered and while the experience may make you feel special, you still have to spend most of your time in line for a limited number of attractions.

Honestly 2 perks are worth it. Me personally I love DVC just fpr having a place to escape the winter...even if its just a few weekends here and there. My kids and wife still love the parks. Me .....only when new things open. So for us, the AP discount is worth it as well do 2 years of trips in points in 1 year and make the most of the AP as the actual cost per day comes way down.

The other perk....the 10% off dining at many places. Kids don't eat enough to justify a meal plan....nor do I see enough value in it.

The lounge at Epcot is nice to get a drink and get out of the heat. But you are right....the other 'perks' arenta exactly huge....but it does help for some.

As noted, you'd lose if you sold all qualified points. IMO going forward they made it such that their's no reasonable option to get the perks unless the option that's best for that person is not selling much cheaper resale like VGF or VGC. Basically only if buying retail makes sense without the perks will it make sense for the perks. Now there might be a special situation with a large family or a lot of trips where there will be exceptions but even then it'll almost always be best to go resale and just add 75 points.

I have been tossing around the possibility of selling our AKV contract in the next few years because it has been steadily increasing in value. It's a 100-point contract with a Feb UY. We bought it resale in 2008 so it is treated the same as a direct contract. The only reason I would consider selling it is because when the kids are out of high school (2024), DH and I would much rather vacation at HHI instead. I would like to sell the AKV contract and purchase more resale points at HHI. Fortunately, we already own a 50-point contract at HHI which we bought direct so we would not lose any "perks" of being direct owners. Of course, if we are taking a bulk of our vacations at HHI, it's not like any of those "perks" would apply anyways. My biggest hesitation is that when we do go to WDW, it's usually in the fall (October) and by 2024, booking only at the 7-month window, we would pretty much have to rely on 1BRs since by then, studio availability at 7 months will be like a mythical unicorn:joker:.

Who knows what will happen by 2024. DVC might reallocate points for the autumn causing demand to settle a bit.

True, but I think that the trend is for the demand for studios in general to continue to increase due to the rising cost of points and the proliferation of the rental market. The high cost to buy in limits new buyers (and I am referring to those that DVD targets...the "didn't-do-any-research, bought-on-vacation" folks) to buying just enough points for a studio. Combine that with the ease of renting out points to those who are looking to stay "deluxe" for a "moderate" price, which is only true if you are renting a studio, and you could soon see very little available studio inventory. On top of that, many of the recent rehabs have increased the studio occupancy to 5 while keeping only 4 sleeping surfaces in the 1BR's which makes the studios even more attractive for some families.
