Resale Query

We are now in a better financial position to purchase DVC :woohoo:

I have been looking at the various resale sites and it seems that we can get alot more points for our $14,000 (or whatever Disney's basic is) than we can if we go direct through Disney.

Two queries really. We have the room on a credit card to be able to purchase outright, do you think we should go for that option or do we go via disney and do it monthly possible pay off sooner than the original agreed time? This way the credit agreement doesn't show over here.

Secondly we don't mind where our home resort is as we will be wanting to stay at all of the during our DVC time and we always travel off peak so the 7 month window isn't a problem. So do we go for a low priced resale, i've seen some as low at $10,000 for 200 ish points at somewhere like Vero Beach or do we stick the Saratoga Springs??

Im really confused and could do with a little guidance from you experts.

If you go resale you have to pay the closing costs which is $400-600 or so. Also Disney often do deals to reduce the initial outlay. There is currently a very good one if you get reccomended by a current member. One final thing in Saratogas favour and that is that it lasts about 12 years longer than any of the other ones which may or may not be a relevant factor for you.

If you look at resale you need to consider the annual maintenance dues which vary significantly. I think Vero Beach has the highest and Old key west the lowest.

Even travelling off season there can be difficulty at the 7 month point but I think the only time we had problems was for the begining of December which is classed low season but is extremely popular with DVCers.

Things may have changed, but if you're thinking of buying resale I'm not sure if you can pay using a credit card - we had to do a bank transfer! So it might be worth getting in touch with one of the resale companies and asking what the deal is these days!

If you're not bothered about where you stay, I would suggest either getting an Old Key West resale for the biggest villas for the least points, or Saratoga Springs direct from Disney for the extra 12 years. Vero Beach probably wouldn't make sense, unless you would think you want to stay there one day.

Lisa - hi! I remember "speaking" to you about this a while back. Good to see you!

I would be really reluctant to put an amount as large as that on CCs personally (remember what professsion I am in ;) ) unless you thought you would be in a position to pay it off quite quickly, and were very disciplined about doing it.

CCs might mean you really end up paying over the odds for this over time unless you pay it back quickly.

Are you in a situation yet to get a (non secured) loan? That would be my preferred option - then pay outright with your loan and repay the loan. I though the Disney financing was not a great deal when I looked into it 2 years ago (though I accept they may have changed their UK finance partner).

Also remember that UK off peak is not necessarily DVC offpeak! For example, the beginning of December which is a TRULY offpeak season in terms of flight costs is HIGH season for DVC due to the low cost of rooms for points during this period (as an example)

Good luck :)
