Other then the price what is the difference? I was told if you buy resale you can only ue the points to stay at that clib. Is that true? Also if you book most of the time after 7 months does it matter where you buy?

Thanks

Sorry for typo :-) on my phone and on the road

DVC Members who have purchased resale can use their points at any DVC Resort (based on availability) as well as for the World Passport Collection. Resale buyers after March, 2011 cannot use their points for the Disney Collection (Cruise line, other Disney resorts), Adventure Collection or Concierge Collection.

The 7 month reservation availability will depend on which resort, what time of year, what type of accommodation and what view you hope to get. You should be able to get a reservation someplace at 7 months but may not get the resort or the dates you want. Some consider a purchase at VB because it is often offered at the lowest price only to later discover that is has the highest annual fees. If you are planning to stay at WDW primarily, it may be best to consider a purchase at one of the WDW resorts.

Good luck! :)

So if I am not a dvc member and buy resale I can use the points at dvc at Disney? Was looking at AKL becuase of the extra perks, but would want to stay at BLT. We would do most of our travel in Oct or mid May, but would only book around 3-5 months out. Would that work?

You can book any DVC resort 7 month out, no matter which resort you own. Buy the one you would like to stay so you can book 11 month out.

You probably wouldn't be able to get BLT at 3-5 months...I tried to get at 7 months for travel in October and the room category I wanted wasn't available. You shouldn't have a problem getting AKL on short(er) notice.

But yes, you can buy resale and use at any of the DVC resort.

If you want to stay at BLT, buy at BLT. Even if you own there, it's going to hard to get anything at 3-5 months. DVC works best when you can book 7-11 months in advance.

If you really cannot book more than 3 to 5 months out you might find DVC isn't a good fit for you. The people who seem most disappointed by their purchase are those who want to use it like that at the last minute and are surprised by the lack of availability. For October you might find it hard to book at 3 months. We are going late August and at 3 months there was no real availability anywhere

A lot of people say you can get into AKV anytime but that hasn't been my experience this year. I am finding it a lot harder and I think it may be because it is getting close to being sold out and there are currently not a lot if contracts available resale whereas before there were.

Your DVC points, whether purchased from Disney or resale, can be used at any DVC resort. For both, you have a priority 11-month booking window at your "Home Resort", 7-months everywhere else.

Perhaps the most difficult adjustment we had to make when purchasing DVC was booking our vacations well in advance. We were "last minute" WDW vacationers, often booking our trips only a couple of months out. With DVC, we find ourselves booking vacations at the 11-month or 7-month window. Then, if we change our vacation plans, cancelling that trip and rebooking another.

The second biggest adjustment was dealing with limited availability. Disney has sold about 98% of all available points at the DVC resorts. This means that the resorts are effectively 100% much of the year. For example, my first DVC purchase was at BWV but even I was unable to book a 2-bedroom "Standard View" room at BWV at 11 months. (We ended up booking a Boardwalk View.) DVC members like to save money just like anyone. That means some of the least expensive rooms are the first to be booked.

May and mid-Oct aren't particularly more difficult to book, except at BWV and BCV during the popular F&W Festival at Epcot, which are extremely difficult to book if these are not you Home Resorts.

The good news is that it's much easier to book at SSR and OKW, even on short notice. AKV isn't too difficult to book right now but I think this will change once AKV sells out.

If you can only book 3-5 months out, TIME SHARING (and make no mistake, DVC is a timeshare) is probably not for you.

To avoid disappointment, buy where you most want to stay. If you really want BLT, then purchase a resale. Plenty BLTs are available on the resale market but prices are high. Still, it will cost much less than purchasing AKV directly from Disney.

If you intend to purchase DVC as a way to save money, don't finance!!!
Financing pretty much destroys any savings you might have achieved.

Thanks! Lots to think about. For about the next 12 years we will not be able to plan 7 or 11 months out due to my husband line of work. It is not that I only want to say atBLT but the monorail. Love the poly and on my way home from there now. Looked at the GFV, but becuase we could not book 11 months out was thinking we would get more for th3 money at AKL. They did check and I can get BLT for October of this year. We would pay in cash so now I just need to figure out if it will save us money long term.

In this case, I wouldn't recommend you buy NOW. You CAN rent, and still get discounted reservations (less than cash) but those reservations are almost always final.

Maybe after the 12 years, see if it's still right for you.

Agreed. Especially at BLT. It books up fairly quick. I'm sure it might be possible, but not likely during October because of the MNSSHP. People like staying there because it's easy access to Magic Kingdom. Might be easier in May, but not much.

They checked availability to make a reservation or availability of a contract to buy BLT points? There are no studios available in October of this year, and there's scattered nights throughout for 1 and 2 bedrooms. And who is "they", the Disney guide?

If you love the Poly, then consider waiting a few years. Rumors are very strong that Disney will add a DVC at the Poly later this decade.

I thought the same thing. BLT has extremely limited availability for October, no more than one or two consecutive nights available.

I suspect "they" are talking about renting at BLT directly from Disney. "They" don't understand that paying Disney cash is not the same as using DVC points.

The DVC person who we spoke with. He told me he put it on hold till theI 29th in my name.

Id buy direct its a lot less hassle , and you get full benefits .
Unless you are purchasing at AKV, buying direct is a bit of a hassle right now. Most WDW DVCs (BLT, BCV, BWV, and VWL) have lengthy waiting lists. From what people are reporting, buying resale at these resorts might actually be faster.

If this "DVC person" is a guide, that must mean he can get you BLT with Oct UY. Whether or not you can use those points for a stay this year is subject to availability. The guide can sometimes make their magic -- but everyone is subject to inventory.

Cash inventory is a different bucket, and yes there might be available rooms for cash. But these same rooms won't be available for points.

One of the few mistakes people make is that they think if rooms are available for cash booking, they should be available for points booking - a lot ged mad/frustrated/unhappy/lied to when they aren't.

What did they put on hold? A DVC room using points or simply a room at a DVC resort?

It could be that, to try to encourage you to make a purchase, your sales rep has the ability to rent out rooms using the points owned by Disney. Disney owns about 2% of all the points at DVC resorts; these rooms normally are not available to book by DVC members using DVC points.

I assure you that using your DVC points as a member, it's essentially impossible to book BLT for October 2013. Right now, it's pretty difficult to find more than 3 or 4 consecutive nights at BLT for the next 7 months.

Unless you are able to decide your WDW vacation plans at least 7 months out, you are likely to experience a great deal of disappointment trying to book rooms using your DVC points.
