Resale DVC benefits

Found this thread very helpful - looking into buying DVC resale b/c direct is just bonkers right now. Maybe in the future I'll buy direct (when VDH opens?) and then sell my resale contract.

The savings is just too good to pass up for some fringe benefits.

Yeah some discounts still work. When I was resale only, Disney’s own system applied discounts on some stuff that was supposed to just be blue card. They do seem to be getting tighter in person at the parks, but who is eligible/ineligible is so convoluted, hard for CMs to keep up especially with the high number of temporary and short term employees.

As far as grandfathered… that is only for owners who bought before certain dates. That is not transferable.

I think that I said earlier, but I'm no longer going to "out" myself. If a CM asks if I'm a member then the answer is "Yes". I am a DVC member. It's up to them / Disney to drill deeper into what type of member I am. It's not my fault that Disney created such a beast of a system.

If you want the merchandise discount (and live in the US), open up a chase checking account. Select the Disney debit card (existing members can just secure message to change to one). The Disney Debit card comes with pretty much the same discounts, but you need to pay with that debti card.

Yes resale members get complimentary access to equipment too! I think it is kept at Community Hall in most resorts, and you just show your resort reservation. That is not tied to blue card perks.

Think about how much you saved purchasing resale over direct. That discount probably was much more than any merchandise/food discount you would get.

Was at Poly last weekend and was checking out with some merch. Cast members asks to see my DVC credentials and she made a point to say she was checking to see if I had the right DVC membership type for the discount. First time I heard it verbalized like that... deliberately checking for the blue card.

Think about how much you saved purchasing resale over direct. That discount probably was much more than any merchandise/food discount you would get.

I'm new here (first post) and am considering a direct purchase contract and I'm not seeing that much of a savings in buying a resale contract over direct when you consider utility value, duration, and total cost. Maybe I have a lot more to learn, but my math shows about a 6%-12% savings with finding a low-priced resale contract. I suppose if you're wanting a specific home resort and UY that Disney is no longer selling as direct, then resale is pretty much your best route.

I imagine you are comparing the cost of Poly direct vs. resale. And, I agree with you - if I wanted Poly points, I’d buy them direct right now - relatively small premium for points that get full direct benefits and are not restricted in any way. Very different equation with just about any other home resort.

Am I that transparent? 150pt Poly direct is exactly what I'm looking at. I've been looking at resale and for years and when I breakdown the years remaining, I'm noticing that true cost per point is as low as $11.43 (Saratoga Springs) and as high as $16.71 (Beach Club). Buying a direct 150pt contract for Poly is $35,400 plus a projected $80K in annual dues over 50 years, so my estimate is the rough cost to be ~$15.38 per point. What I've noticed is that many sites are calculating their $/pt by the contract purchase price divided by the annual point allotment, neglecting the annual dues and years left on the contract. While it might not seem like much of a value today, it seems like the value is appreciated down the road as the cost of vacations (like everything) inflates. While the cost of the original purchase is an absolute constant and DVC points charts are relatively constant, the only inflationary component I see are the annual dues...which seems to pace below consumer and production price indices (CPI and PPI).

Getting the Blue Card membership is important to me since it has (for now) the most versatile perks that would be desired by my friends and family. I know my wife and sister-in-law would love to check out the exclusive lounges and special events.

You should check out dvcrofr.com. Some great calculators that help demonstrate exactly what you’re talking about - the longer you keep your contract, the more value it accretes.

As long as you like/love Poly, sounds like a direct Poly points purchase makes a lot of sense. I almost bought there but loved Riviera so much more so that’s where all my direct points are. Math is similar over the long run, just a higher cost to exit if I change my mind.

I was speaking more in general. There might be certain ones (as pointed out by airjay) where purchasing direct can make more sense. I haven't been following the resale market recently, so not sure how those have been trending. I bough mine (BLT) almost a decade ago and back then, resale for many DVC properties made so much more sense.
