Required Vaccinations for Children?

I could see this coming very much into play by March of 2022 but not too much earlier... I think by summer of 2022 it will be a wide spread requirement.

Now that FDA & CDC have approved Pfizer for children aged 5-11, will DCL require it? If so, when might it start? I have a cruise booked with my 8-year-old at the end of December and I am really interested to see how this all plays out...

I think it is very possible that they will eventually require it but I think December is likely early for that to take effect.

We are scheduled for a January cruise and my daughter made the appt. for my 11 year old granddaughter on Monday so we know she will be done in time.
We weren't sure when they would implement it.

There’s enough time to get a child fully vaccinated by a mid-December cruise….so if you’re planning to sail anytime after that, I’d ASSUME that the vaccination will be required.

I would put that at a maybe. Because this uses a pediatric vial, a lot of places are not booking yet because they want to have it in hand before opening appointments.

I live somewhere with good access, and most places aren't even starting shots in arms until next week. Which means second dose after Thanksgiving

That's a fair point...I just think anyone sailing mid-December or later should prepare themselves for the possibiliy that it will become a requirement. I don't necessary think it will be required that early but technically it *could* be and I wouldn't want to be caught suddenly unable to sail!

I live in a city and it's like the Hunger Games, in part because a lot of the usual suspects aren't sure when their supply will arrive.

As with the adult vaccines -- roll-out will vary because different states are handling it differently. Some are offering all or most through state-run clinics, some through regular retail pharmacies, some through certain pharmacies, some through pediatricians or PCPs, etc.

And this is only the US roll-out. I don't believe Canada or Europe have approved a vaccine for children. As the US opens to more international travel, that will likely be a consideration. But ultimately, I think the vaccine requirements for DCL cruises will be driven by the ports-of-call, and DCL is likely to go with the strictest of all ports they visit and use those requirements across the board for all cruises for consistency.

I hope it isn't required for xmas cruises. For me ... I remain unconvinced that my child is at risk enough to give him the vaccine and I don't want to rush into it.

This is my biggest thing. In 5 weeks, I hope that we see a change to policy that allows anyone over the age of 5 who is fully vaccinated to skip the PCR test.

I got DD's first appointment for Sunday. Most local places are now scheduling 2 weeks out.
In the interim, if/until they require it, this would be a nice compromise update to current policy. And a nice reward for families willing to vaccinate their kids.

Please no. There are other places to have that conversation. I’d suggest starting with your pediatrician, but let’s keep this thread open for updates as policy changes/updates roll in.

Please no. Don't give pediatrician suggestions here. This is not the appropriate forum.

I would say by early spring we’ll probably see vaccines for everyone eligible being required. I doubt it will be this year because even the kids getting vaccinated this week will not have both doses until at least the end of the month. It’s going to take some time for people to get their kids in. I do think that the cruiselines and countries like the Bahamas understand that so there will be a couple months grace. But if you have now eligible kids and are planning on cruising anytime soon I would get them vaccinated sooner rather than later because a mandate is very possible in the future.

So far this thread has been nothing but "opinion" which I thought was against the forum rules about Covid.

I called my son's doctor today and I can't even make an appointment until Monday...so I probably won't be able to get him in until mid-month...at least we have plenty of time until June. :-(

Our pediatrician group said they already have enough supplies and will begin scheduling soon but so far haven’t heard anything. We already have appointments at Walgreens. Walgreens and CVS have both begun.

I wish they’d require it ASAP.

This is the kind of opinion that is supposed to remain out of the disboard threads. Some parents will be for vaccinating their children and some not and we are not here to discuss that.

Guessing how DCL will shape policy is appropriate but putting out these kinds of opinions will inflame the opposing view and that is not why we are here.
