repositioning cruises

Yes. They do the Panama Canal 2 times a year and a transatlantic 2 times a year. They also transition from Vancouver to San Diego, if not going to Hawaii.

They also do a San Juan to Miami (which is sort of like a repo cruise IMO)

A "repositioning" cruise is any cruise where the ship is changing her homeport. So, any cruise that starts in one port, and ends in a different port, where the ship will then do round trips out of that port, is a repo cruise.

All I have done are repositioning cruises, they also sail from Galveston to San Juan, and now San Juan to New Orleans. In theory the annual side step to Hawaii from Vancouver and then the trip back are repositioning cruises too.

I've heard that repositioning cruises on other cruise lines may be less expensive than their regular cruises. Is this the case for DCL?

On Royal we’ve repo’ed Vancouver to Seattle via Alaska. On DCL LA to Miami and Copenhagen to Dover, with Dover to New York coming up and the San Juan to New Orleans scheduled.

Yes, plenty of Repositioning cruises on many lines including Disney. Fewer on Disney since they only have 4 ships and two are based at port canaveral. Typically they are cheaper but not always. The Alaska and Norway/Iceland was about typical cruise price but the others were a little less.

In addition to the repositioning cruises already mentioned, Disney Cruise has been doing cruises between Barcelona and Dover (one or both ways each year, depending on schedule).

Because the repositioning cruises are often longer and during the school year (and thus less appealing to families with school-age children), they do tend to be less expensive on a per-night basis than other cruises.

The cost per day on repo cruises on DCL is lower than on other DCL cruises, but the fact that they are longer cruises still make them expensive, at least much more than repo cruises on other lines. I’m talking about Panama and Transatlantic cruises that are 10-14 days. The repos using San Juan as a transit point are priced the same as regular cruises in the Caribbean.

Repos are cheaper even the ones going to or leaving from San Juan. Just by looking at one for 2 people on November 10 from NYC to San Juan is 1786 for 2 people. Cheapest inside of course.

We have also done a Norwegian Fjords cruise that repositioned from Copenhagen to Dover. Next year we will be doing two repositioning cruises. One from Vancouver to Hawaii and the other an 11 night Northern European cruise from Dover to Copehagen

True repositioning cruises are like the TA cruises where the ship is going to a new port or area for a season, the Vancouver to Hawaii or Hawaii to Vancouver cruises are really not "repositioning" in the truest sense of the word, but they are one way cruises and no doubt good ones to be on. The TA and PC cruises are great value for the dollar paid, but they are not "cheap" when you compare to other lines. That said, if there's only two of you then they are a great price.

Yup! We got a really good (for Disney) price for our NYC-San Juan verandah for 3 of us. Prices were so good that we recently upgraded to our first concierge room! :earsboy:

Not sure if the transatlantic cruise from Dover to NYC is what you call repositioning cruise but it was fantastic. We did it in September 2018. Great value. Plus 4 days at sea in a row, great weather, and terrific entertainment. I’d do it again.

Yes that’s a repositioning cruise.

We did a repo on the Wonder from San Juan to PC in 2018. Looking at the opening day prices, our cruise in a 5C was $2755. If you booked a same length (4 night) Dream cruise in the same category it would have been $3340.

We are sailing concierge on the Vancouver to San Diego repositioning cruise this September and I will say that it was certainly cheaper for concierge than we've paid for other concierge cruises.
