We went to Huntington Beach for a day last week.
The weather was cool, but the kids loved it anyway. The beach was OK but I didn't like the seaweed and tar on the beach. And there was all kinds of trash in the sand -- pieces of wood, plastic, cigarette butts, etc. -- we had to keep a sharp eye on the little ones. I was also dismayed that there were no lifeguards on duty.
Maybe we just went to the wrong part of the beach.
We did have a very nice lunch at Ruby's -- I highly recommend it.

You must have gone to the wrong part of the beach because there are always lifeguards when I go except at night (I live in HB.) Not sure what part of the eight miles of beach you were on (Huntington State Beach, Huntington City Beach and Bolsa Chica make up the eight miles of beach.) I know there are some stretches of city beach that have no lifeguards. These tend to be the areas were parking is very limited. Wondering which beach you went to and the day and time.

Not sure where we were, but it was right in front of a rental place and bathrooms. There were lots of lifeguard stations, but they were not manned.
