Report cards

Where my granddaughters go to school (public) extra credit work is not allowed. Grades must only come from work and tests that everybody participates in.

I guess this isn't empathetic to the OP but my daughter is an Honor student who got all A's except for one very high B. I don't know if the teacher would make an exception because it didn't occur to me to ask...that's the grade she earned. I congratulated her for the A's and encouraged her to work harder for that last A.

My district has a "parent viewer" system where we can monitor grades on the internet throughout the year. Maybe your school has something like this? It is very helpful in order to prevent unwelcome surprises and stay on top of kids that need it.
Yeah...just took a look at DS's assignments. What's with one homework assignment outstanding that was due? He said he didn't know there was something printed on the other side. :furious: Flip ALL your papers over!  TV is gone until everything has a grade by it.

The grade your DD earned is the grade she should get. I know it seems harsh that she missed it by .01, but she missed the cut off. What if the next lowest grade was off by .02, that person should miss out too? or since it was only .02, give them the nudge? Where should the line be drawn? I know where the line should be.....69.9 and 70.0. That is probably what the teacher has in the syllabus, and that's what should be the standard for the class.

As far as extra credit. I don't think it should be allowed. Especially to just one student to pass. She should have worked harder through out the quarter to get the grade she wanted. I'm sure there are other students who would have loved to have the chance to better their grade. Even A students might want a chance. I know my DD always does extra credit when offered. Her thinking is that it can only help.

Its only the quarter grade, she still has time to get her grade up before the semester is up.

I have a hard time getting my head around the whole fail at 69.9. At DD's school, anything below and 80 and you are in trouble. Next year it will be 85, and the last years will be 90.

In most of OHIO, unless you are at a private school, a 70% would be a C-. I guess I would wonder if extra credit was offerred throughout the quarter?

.

None of the school districts I sub in (they are all in the southeastern part of Ohio) have 70% as a C. Most of them, the bottom of a C is a 75%, then a D is 69%-74% and anything below a 69% is failing.

I have no idea about the grading scale in the other regions of Ohio.

I'm not sure why the OP isn't more worried about why her DD is wanting to get a D. Unless there is some other factor, a D should be unacceptable also.

I realize that this is the first grading period and sometimes it takes time to get used to a new teacher but if the student is having that much trouble with the curriculum the OP/student needs to find out why she is having trouble. Time to schedule a conference - not to give the teacher a hard time about changing the grade but to find out why DD is having so much trouble and how she can improve for the next grading periord.
