I have a window that is 48" x 48" and needs replaced (the seal is broke, and it's 25+ years old). Would it look better, the same, or worse if I replaced it with two 24" windows instead? Are there any advantages or disadvantages? I'm trying to do an image search, but no luck so far.

Thank you!

Its not that easy, each window needs framing on the sides to nail the window into. This would cut down the actual space for the window below 24". Then you would need to cover this framing member with some sort of exterior to match the existing exterior of your house.

Depending on your window style you might be able a single 48" window that was made to look like two 24" windows.

A double window will cost you a lot more and as above will be smaller... I do not think two 20 or 22 inch by 48 inch windows will look good unless you get casement windows.
The only suggestion I have is to get a 48 wood window Anderson, Pella, Jeld-wen depending on budget Anderson being the cheapest. Anderson's lower line is a white wrapped wood window Home Depot may have the size. I suggest wood as overtime Vinyl in that size will warp and leak no matter how good the quality it just can not hold the weight of the glass. You could also get aluminum...
Please research on how to measure as a 48 inch window is actually less.. See if HD stocks the size you will save $$$ on stock sizes. Please also be aware that different HD stock Different size windows even ones that are close in Distance from each other.

It will look strange with two smaller windows considering you have to have framing in between the two. Unless you're talking about one big picture window that opens on both sides and the middle is just solid glass. Always, always go for the biggest window possible!

I replaced a huge picture window (96 in wide) with 3 double hung windows and it looks way better than the picture window did, but I replaced all my slider windows with double hung so it matches the rest of the house.
All of the houses in this neighborhood are the same and most people replaced the picture widow with multiple double hungs or a bay or bow.

You don't need framing, you can order multiple double hungs and they are made together by the manufacturer and installed as one window.

This is not my house but it is what my window looks like

Emode - YES! That's the look I was thinking of. Are there any advantages/disadvantages of that type of window?
