Replacement for Costco Amex

I just got the mail from Amex and Costco explaining that the Amex card will be replaced by a CitiBank Visa.

I have no use for a CitiBank Visa, as I already have a Visa card. I plan to cancel that one.

The question is whether there are any benefits to keeping an American Express card (not necessarily for Disney or Universal Studios)? If so, what sort of Amex should I apply for? Are there any free Amex cards?

The benefits on the Costco Visa are actually really good, especially without an annual fee

4% cash back on gas purchases
3% cash back on restaurant and travel purchases
2% from Costco and Costco.com

I don't have a Costco card, but I am almost tempted to get it.

But I already get similar benefits from Chase. And since I've moved away from Costco (or rather closer to a shopping district that doesn't have Costco), I find I'm no longer using it and plan on letting my membership lapse. It's a great company and great place to shop, but just isn't working for me anymore.

And if you want a no fee Amex, check out the Amex Blue Cash Everyday.

3% at grocery stores up to $6000
2% at gas stations
2% at department stores

There is a signup bonus for $150 after spending $500 in 3 months, plus 10% back on wireless phone bill.

I originally hadn't planned to convert to the Costco Visa but after seeing the benefits, I'll definitely keep it. I shop weekly at Costco and the 2% from the Visa plus the 2% from the Executive Membership is very attractive.

But if you're not shopping at Costco and have similar benefits with Chase, then I can see your point that it isn't worth it to you. The Amex Blue Cash Everyday card is an excellent one, especially with no annual fee. I have the Amex Blue Cash Preferred with a $75 annual fee that pays 6% at grocery stores up to $6,000, 3% at gas stations and 3% at department stores. In addition to groceries, I use it to buy gift cards (Amazon, Target, Starbucks, ebay) at the grocery store since I also earn fuel rewards. Then there are the Amex offers that in my case have more than paid for the annual fee.

I got the info too. I will probably just cancel it and use my chase freedom for the 5% quarterly categories when applicable, otherwise my SW Visa. I only ever used the amex at costco. I prefer to rack up points rather than get cash back.

I do love those amer exp offers but the ones I get on my costco amex are usually not as good as the ones my husband gets on his blue.:headache:

Very true. The blue offers were usually much better. I also had two JetBlue Amex cards that I closed before they converted to Barclay. Poor Amex is losing partners right and left.

I can't wait for the change!! This is way better than my Chase one most of the year. It doesn't help you much but it is very attractive to me. I wish they always took visa.

which chase card gives u 4% on gas?

You may want to check if this is a planned replacement. With the change in JetBlue, my Amex card was closed out (not at my request) and I was auto issued the new Barclay Bank card

Not sure if this is going to go the same way or not. You may not have a choice to keep your Amex card

When does this go into effect? I don't have a Costco Amex but I would love to use my Visa and earn points.

I may have misunderstood, but I was under the impression that AMEX was closing my Costco credit card when it switches over.

I believe the date is 6/20/16.

I have this card. If you sign up always check those offers every month. I have the 10% (up to $30) back (statement credit)on the wireless deal and the same for my cable bill. I also have gotten offers for $20 off $60 at Amazon, $15 off $35 at Walmart. I usually don't get any e-mail, I log in and check.

When I got the notification I canceled my Jet Blue Amex. The new Barclays version comes with a 30,000 point bonus for new card holders which I plan to become very soon.
