Repair Impact Damage?

I had an accident today with my Tamron lens. Two pieces of the lens broke off, scratching the front glass. Can't attach filters, lens cap or hood, since those are the parts that snapped off. It still functions, but I can feel friction zooming. Anyone had to repair impact damage before? I've never had to before, so I'm not sure what to expect as an estimate, or if it's the damage will be too extensive. On vacation now, so it will be a while before I can send it off. Just curious in the meantime.

I've never had one repaired for impact damage, but have had them repaired for other issues. It really depends on the quality of the lens (not all are created equal) vs the cost of repair vs replacement costs. Do you have your gear insured? If not I would highly recommend you do so. I have it on my home owners policy and its cheap peace of mind. The two repair centers I have used (Sigma, Pentax), both give free repair estimates. I think that would be my first step. BTW which Tamron lens is it?

The only lens I've dropped I didn't repair because it was an entry level lens and it was cheaper to just replace it.

I dropped my Sigma 70-200 f2.8. I sent it to Sigma and they sent me a free estimate. I cost $200 to repair! For what the lens cost new it was worth the $200 repair! Now I have insurance through ppa.com.

It's the 17-50mm f/2.8. I never thought insurance was worth it for people like me, but I can say now IT IS. I'm so thankful I can still take photos since I didn't bring a back up lens in this focal range, but it would ease my mind if I had a policy. I'll be highly encouraging my friend, who just put even more money into a new camera, to consider additional insurance.

I read Tamron's service/repair page as soon as I got back to our room after it happened, now to just hurry up and wait to get home
