Renting wheelchairs at WDW

I am currently recovering from abdominal surgery and am going to WDW in June. I know, I know I should not do this but the trip was a gift from family and was booked way before the surgery ever came up. Anyway, I am now walking but am very weak and have lost much of my endurance and strength. What I need to know is do I need any type of documentation from my doctor to rent a wheelchair if the need arises? I am training daily so I hope this doesn't come into play but just in case I need to know. Thank you in advance!

Nope. Anyone can rent a wheelchair or ECV without any documentation - I think you might have to show ID, but that's it.

:welcome: As PP indicated, no documentation required to rent a wheelchair or ECV.

However, the in-park rentals must be left in the park...and it can be long haul back to your room regardless of transportation option or resort. You might want to consider renting from an off-site vendor - several are listed in the disABILITIES FAQ sticky near the top of this forum. These tend to be less expensive than in-park rentals. Most people walk an average of 6 miles per day at WDW -- so for a week long trip that's a lot of walking.

You may want to consider an ECV rather than a wheelchair as it will give you more independence and won't require someone else in the family to push you all day. Unless you are used to propelling your own manual wheelchair for distances, you likely won't get far in WDW on your own.

Enjoy your vacation!

They "may" have someone show ID if their age (must be 18 to rent an ECV from Disney) is in question. But just rented an ECV at Epcot (in March) for my Dad and no ID was asked for. I filled out his paperwork and all.
Cannot speak for wheelchairs...but I would honestly doubt they would ask for ID. :)
