Renting Stroller vs. Checking

DW, DD, and I talked about this last night.. Turns out my memory was a little fuzzy. Last year at Busch Gardens she skipped the stroller completely; it was the year before where we ended up needing one.
Both times we went to BG almost every day of the week and it was really hot... So I'm thinking that if she didn't need it last year then we'll probably be good without it at WDW this year. We'll still play it by ear, of course.

We gate check our strollers so that we can use them all the way to the gate.

Then we have our strollers for the resort time too-- which we would only have if we rented from off site.

We find that our children seem to enjoy their familiar stroller when so much is changing.

I recommend renting one from an outside company. It was around $80 for a week for a single and I think around $100 for a double. Delivered to your resort, and they will pick it back up. The brand usually rented is called a City Mini and we find them really easy to push, fold up and store. The kids enjoyed them as well.
This is what we did for children aged 5.5 and 2.5. We rented the double. My son is big for is age but I knew he couldn't walk all day. It was awesome. He never walked and the strollers were a breeze to push. DS even managed a nap in them. The doubles are a bit bulky when folded but DH managed to get it on and off the bus fairly easy.

This is a really good point in general... Kids are expected to deal with a lot of change these days. Waaaay more than I had to deal with growing up in the 70s & early 80s (I'm 40).

Childhood is short enough as it is (too effing short)... If using a stroller (familiar or not) at WDW this year will help to slow it down for my daughter even just a little then I think I might reconsider using one again.

If she ends up walking most of the way (which she probably will) then fine, but I'm thinking it'll be worth it if she needs it even only once, and knowing the comfort is there if she needs it will help her to enjoy herself.

Yeah, I'm flip-flopping, but I guess your comment in the wake of a great Father's Day with DW and DD has left me a little mushy and wanting to extend my daughter's childhood as much as is reasonable. :thumbsup2

I rented a double stroller for my kids way past the "appropriate" age. No regrets. They used it most of the time. They rested and were able to spend a lot more time in the parks. When my oldest got a headache, she went to sleep in it. I would rent one and not think twice about it

I'd bring one that easily folds for bus riding, and using at the resort:thumbsup2 much cheaper.... I you don't have a small one, I'd buy 2 cheap umbrella strollers and bring them. It's good bet the 5 yo won't be sitting too much, but since it's your first trip, nice to have, easy to fold, take, gate check, and all around easy to use...and the cost of 2 umbrella strollers is about the cost of one days rental:scared1::eek::sick:

Those of you who have done the stroller rental with larger children.. Is there a company that has strollers with higher weight limits? Or did you just order the ones that have a limit of 50 pounds? My 6 year old is very tall for her age, and is about 55 pounds. Will she be comfortable in a rented double stroller with a 50lb per child limit?

Maybe The City Elite,City GT Single, or Special Tomato Joggermight fit the bill. My daughter is just almost 51", so if we go with one she might have a slight squeeze (they are 48" - 50" but fine in the weight department).

We are gate-checking a stroller for our 5-year-old. I would NOT bring/buy an umbrella stroller. I don't think they steer well and I do not want to be hunched over all day to push it. Not to mention, if I'm going to have a stroller, I want storage!!! I considered renting, but I'm cheap and DH wants it for the walk at the TTC:)
