Could someone please explain to me the process for renting points and why people say it is a great value? Every time I look at the rental points they have listed it is so much more expensive than just staying any regular resort. If say we can get a cabin at Fort Wilderness for around $400 a night what would be the advantage of renting DVC points? Just trying to figure things out because I find it very confusing

It's generally cheaper to rent points. For example, a week in June at SSR in a 2BR will cost around $640/night renting points vs $658/night through Disney. To do the math you have to look at DVC resorts. Ft Wilderness is not DVC.

Another advantage of renting is getting a larger room - 1BR, 2BR, grand villas...

I wonder where you are looking to get prices. I hope you are not looking at the prices for DVC rooms on disneyworld.com and thinking that is "renting points," because it isn't.

Forgot to add that I used $16/pt as a rental price.

Here are my recent examples for you.
January we stayed in a 2 br at CCV for $500 a night by buying a confirmed reservation from DVC rental store. We split the cost with our friends and each paid close to what we were going to spend at Caribbean beach for pirate rooms winch was $222 a night. We had a full kitchen that ended up saving us money by cooking. We also saved money once you factor in parking, winch is free for DVC rentals. There is no comparison in the two. The rooms at CCV are beautiful! We also added on a night at AKV Kidani savanna view studio. I payed around $200 a night by renting points here on the board for $13pp.
I have a stay at BWV studio at the end of the month. That room was $220. I also have a stay at BCV at the end of March winch cost me $220 as well. Both of those were rented through DisBoards. I stayed at YC in September and booked through Disney w/ the 40% off AP discount. That stay was close to $400 per night once taxes were included plus $25 a night for parking.
Of course I’m renting points that are expiring soon so they are priced cheaper per point. I also live an hour and a half away so I have a lot of flexibility. Renting DVC rooms allows me to stay at Deluxe resorts for moderate prices. I have two under 3yrs old so it saves me a TON of money having a kitchenette. I can’t tell you how many $13 kids meals I’ve thrown away at Disney. Now being at a Deluxe we have some convenient form of transportation to hop back over for lunches and a nap. Plus, maybe most importantly, the pools are amazing! I could go on and on but I’ll stop there.

It does depend on what you want and where you want to stay.

There are ways to book cash rooms for a similar price and of course , WDW reservations are not as risky given that you can cancel pretty easy.

But, if there are few discounts for cash, the rental rate could save hundreds of dollars over that same room on cash.

I look up DVC points chart to find out how many points I’ll need for the type of room during that travel period. Then I use the room availability tool on DVC rental store to get a guesstimate on availability. This of course is not aways accurate. So if I need 15 points to stay at BoardWalk in February and I see someone has points for sale for $13pp my stay will cost me $195.

Renting points is always going to be much cheaper and the opportunity to rent a larger room. Usually, the cancellation is much harder.

I scored $180 a night-total, Aulani long weekend rental, fell in love and secured a resale offer while still there. Ha! Either one of the cheapest deals or a very expensive one, depending on how you look at it! Sometimes rentals are it! But yes, you have to be sure you are going to go!

Only downside or renting DVC points is you have to pay upfront And basically cannot cancel. I would also rent through an offshore provider to avoid State taxes.

Also, DVCs are housed at luxury resorts, not moderates or values, so comparing Fort wilderness to Polynesian is incorrect. Even with the 35% off deal they recently ran, took another 20% off that by renting DVC. All in, you’re looking at prob at least50% off RAC rate by renting DVC.

When comparing Disney cash prices with DVC rental prices, be sure to consider the impact of the Florida & County lodging taxes. They are charged on cash rentals, but not point rentals. In Orange County, it's 12.5% and in Osceola County, it's 13.5%. That can make a big difference!
