Renting points vs reservation s through Disney

With Epic opening next year, what in the summer, I bet the discounts could be substantial then.

In summer 2022 we were able to get a reservation through Disney for a DVC room and the price was just about equal to renting points. This summer we got discount that's actually cheaper than renting points would have been (for a 1 bedroom at BLT). That being said, we go in August. February might be a little trickier for discounts if you're going President's day week....otherwise generally the flexibility of going through Disney is worth it for us even if it costs a little more.

That's really odd that you would pay less with Disney's discount versus renting dvc points. I'm going next May for 6 nights and staying at the board walk. I originally had the bounceback offer at 35% off which I would still have to pay $3000 for those 6 nights. Renting DVC points from the DVC rental store was 2500 for the same exact room. Plus the dvc rental store has a better cancelation policy (than other dvc rental companies) so you don't lose your money it's held in credit and it's good for 2 years if you have to cancel (but only as long as you cancel 75 days before arrival.)

…I was thinking of booking a studio via the Disney website and hoping when discounts are released that I could save some money (knowing there may not be discounts on that room type and many have to change)
Then don’t book this room. Disney will not apply discounts to your previously booked room unless it is available for a new booking. As I tried to explain previously by booking a cash room at a rack rate you decrease the chances the room will be available at a discount. They discount only a small amount of their unsold inventory. Taking a room out of that inventory when they calculate how many rooms to discount decreases your odds Disney will discount that room on your dates. Only book the room you are willing to pay rack rate for at a rack rate price.

I decided to just hold off a few months and see what discounts come up. We are pretty flexible

The ‘other place’ I use has added a similar cancellation policy, minus the $105 deposit, credits good for 3 years.

I think I know the "other" place you're talking about but I prefer DVC Rental Store for many reasons : I prefer to work with a company within the US, like the fact that you can do payments and only have to pay 25% down once they secure the booking, the customer service reps are current and former Disney employees. And so far (thank God) I have never had to cancel but if I did I would just be turning around and rebooking it within a few months after I canceled anyway. I don't think I would wait with my money tied up for 3 years with any company (I don't even think I'd wait 2 years even with the one I use.😅

Some DVC rentals, OKW and SSR due to the price of points and points needed can be a major savings but you will not see that level of savings at other DVC locaitons such WL, GF, BCV etc.
Flexibility and lack of housekeeping are deal breakers for many. I would book now and hope for a discount.

Agreed. We stayed at CCV in January 2024, booked through Disney. Don’t know what the DVC rental cost was, I didn’t look into it this time, I’ve often thought about it but never done it. The price of CCV studio ended up being less than a WL room through Disney. I watched for special offers and got a 30% discount when it was announced.

Frankly, without even naming dates, CCV studio availability for February is already trash. It was most likely already Not An Option(tm). CCV is one of the resorts that booking closer to 11 months out is key, which would have been March. While not all of the month is within the 7 month booking window, CCV is a resort where that's not necessarily going to help.

Boulder Ridge isn't much better, either. February is more popular than you might think, and weekends go quick.
