Ok, yeah yeah I know NOT the most efficient use of points, BUT lets say you have your heart set on a hotel like Poly. Could it be cheaper going this route?

If you are looking at renting a reservation from a member at a non-DVC resort, it will not be cheaper. You will pay a $95 transfer fee on top of the price of the points which will probably be higher than what you might have to pay for rack rate.
Just to expand a bit...it's 37 points per night for a garden view room at the Poly on a weeknight (Sun-Thurs). For Friday or Saturday night, it's 67 points per night. And that's value season, for the cheapest room category.
So, even if you could get the points for $11-12, you'd be paying over $400/night just for the weeknights Plus that $95 fee.
Now you see why we tell people it's not a good value.
I think it would also be difficult to find an owner willing to rent for a non-DVC reservation. If the reservation had to be cancelled, the points can no longer be used at DVC resorts - only non-DVC resorts.
