Renting Points/Reservation

Maybe I'm out there but it seems that renting points is becoming more difficult....or maybe its just my luck. The type of requests from multiple resort stays, different villa size during a stay, and on and on. Also when you respond to people asking for a reservation you tend not to get a reply.....I guess this can work both ways. Lastly, I am sure many potential renters are holding out for that low low number.........$7 was the latest.....makes it difficult for new owners to justify the rental if there competing against $7. Some renters try to set the terms that they will rent at........I think the owner should set the terms, it is their points being used. Sorry about the rant here but it does seem people are demanding more for very little overall compensation for the owners.

Maybe you had bad luck or maybe I wasn't typical. I am renting for our next trip (I purchased DVC a month later) and I gave him what he asked $11/point. I sat on the computer and e-mailed back and forth the morning he answered my request. I had a few questions because it was the first time I had ever rented. I sent him the money immediately and he mailed everything to me right away. Later that week I e-mailed him to ask if he still had points available because I had not rented them all, he did and he made another reservation for someone else in my family as well. However, I was flexible on travel dates and on locations. But I did get my first choice on locations and only a day or two off on dates. It was very smooth and I feel we are both happy with the outcome. (Although I haven't actually gone yet!) But very excited!

i haven't rented out points in a long while, but i initially found more "high maintenance" people when i posted a for rent than when i contacted one or two from their posts (high maintenance=ppl who didn't have firm plans (such as booked airfare, unapproved time off from work, etc), unsure of who was in their party and/or the ages of their children , whether they would have the money or not, working with multiple owners but not letting them know ~ especially with hard to get ressies like BWV/BW view during F&W, christmas at VWL).
having more posts, more experience, & a longer history on the DIS (such as you have) should command a higher price, imho. it comes down to renters paying just a bit more, & having a better sense of security against losing thousands. (yes, i realize that even "old timers" can be scammers, & newbies totally trustworthy.....but in general a more experienced DISner is less likely to "run with the money" than a newcomer with 3 or so posts). chances are, a veteren is more like to know about the 7/11 month restrictions, availability (& not promise something that can't deliver), DDP, ME, & general vacation planning/recommendations.

we pay for a higher quality product with everything else, why should DVC point rental be different?

I absolutely agree - I have been trying to rent 82 points for 3 weeks now. I had a lady agree to a reservation - I booked it in her name and sent her the invoice. She didn't reply, didn't reply - finally she says that oh, nevermind cancel that I got a better price with my TA discount. Now my points are in a holding account because of her and I have had to discount my asking price. I know she did this on purpose - she had my points holding while she waited for that TA discount to come out and I got hosed because of it!

I have been calling MS every day at least 3 times a day checking on availability for people and then they back out. If it weren't for the 4 month banking change I wouldn't have had these extra points. I missed the deadline by 1 day since I had to cancel my own personal trip. I swear this will be the last time I ever rent.

I hadn't looked at the R/T board for a while, but I see what you mean.

I see one for $5 -- and the owner doesn't even know when his points expire! He says 8/2/08, which gives me a pretty good idea of how he got in a bind to begin with!

The $5 guy has 6 whole posts to his credit, incidentally. There's another offering points @ $7, with 4 posts, and another @ $9 with 3 posts.

I think renters had better be careful over there. It's REAL obvious that some of the folks offering points for rent have no clue what they are doing.

But I don't think owners who are trying to rent points should worry. You don't want the bottom-fishers anyway. Let the people with desperately-distressed points make them happy.

I guess you could define fair as what the actual owner feels. $10 does seem average but it will always remain $10 because there are going to be the $7, $8, $9 offerings. For us we have been successful at the $12 range and have rented, when we had extra points, to some very nice people. But I will admit I've never had distressed points that I had to move........

I didn't rent, I had points transferred to me, I was short on points and I dealt w/ 2 very nice DVC owners who knew exactly what they had, use year etc. and it worked out fine. One was done through PayPal and the other just a check. I paid $10 per point from both. When you get transferred points you can then make the arrangements yourself and you get the confirmation letters. I prefer it to renting

We have recently rented out points that were to expire at the end of the year and had a very pleasant experience with everyone we were in contact with. In fact, I think we made three families very happy.

I guess it might be just the luck of the draw, but we make sure to have a phone conversation and trade addresses/phone numbers to help the trust factor.

I know it only takes one bad apple, but we've been pleased with our choices so far and have made new friends.

Yes, exactly, we are both DVC members, therefore it takes the fear out of dealing w/ someone that you don't know at all. I believe, could be wrong, that you are aloowed one transfer from anyone, cost free, through MS, into your use year. Last year I received 2 points transfers into 2 seperate use years that I used to reserve a GV for our Jun 08 family reunion. I sent the money as I explained after speaking to the members by phone and they then called MS and trasnferred me the points. 15 minutes later I called and made my res. and received my confimration 10 days later. No hassles!

Yes, exactly -- it's a member to member transfer. A non-member would have no way to use the points -- they actualy rent reservations, not points.

You can only do one transfer in OR out per year.

ITA! Didn't understand why one of them kept adding on pts. when they weren't even taking yearly trips. I know those pts. are going to waste.

As a non-DVC owner who has rented points (from a great veteran DisBoard member I might add), I would rather pay $10-$11 per point to a veteran Disboard member/DVC owner who posts regularly before I'd ever pay $5-$8 per point to a new member who has no history on the boards. ANYDAY!

The extra cost is worth the peace of mind.

A veteran Disboard member/DVC owner is more trustworthy, more informed, and more educated about the rental process.

I can't be the only person who feels this way.

I have rented twice now and have always paid what the person was asking. If I want to use what you have I have to pay or I just don't rent. I have found renting points is great for our family. As for responding to emails, I probably over email (sorry to those whom I have rented from) But I just want to make sure I have my i's dotted and my t's crossed.

I completely agree. I'm renting points for the third time this October. I've dealt with three wonderful DVC owners. Each time I've paid between $10 and $12 per point, and I'm happy to do so. I would never be tempted to rent from someone advertising $8 or $9 a point with few posts. I'd rather pay $12 a point and actually have a hotel room when I arrive in Orlando!

I totally agree! This october will be our 3rd time renting points. I never try and barter with the owner. The family always wants to stay at either the BCV or the BWV. I'm happy just to get in there at the reduced rate of renting points so I never question.

I've dealt with some great owners( one in particular ) and have never had a problem. (knock on wood.... ) I'd rather go with someone with a higher post count also. I wouldn't feel comfortable renting from someone with a single post count.
