Renting Points Question

Hello - I'm new to renting points and am wondering how you know who you should rent points from. If you're in the US, would you rent points from someone in another country? It seems that it would be ok as long as I got the Disney confirmation information. What are everyone's thoughts on this? Thanks!

Hi,
I rented points from a fellow DVCer last week and it couldn't have gone smoother. I don't know who he is or where he is from but I took the chance and within 24 hours, I had made my reservation with the rented points. I haven't read the boards to see if anyone had any bad experiences, but mine was great.

I would do a search of the persons past posts to see what he/she is like. Reading what a person says here on the dis gives you a lot of insight into him/her. You may also get an idea of whether they actually have a clue about what they are doing.

When searching the boards, I personally would look for someone who is "known" to the DVC community. Look for how many posts they have, and don't feel funny asking for references and a contract.
Good Luck!

I would think that if you were renting from someone in another country, you would have trouble with the money transfer. I have rented my points out lots of times, and have rented from others, too. I think those who are looking to rent are far less reliable than the people who have the points to rent to others. There are some who want you to "save" points for them--no payment, though--others who try to convince you to lower your cost to $5 or $6 per point because they can't "afford" to pay more. Really--some people are so rude! You can always tell when you are dealing with an experienced person, everything goes smoothly. :moped:

Thanks for all the advice! My research into the DVC points may all be for nothing though - seems to be we can't get the reservation we wanted. So, it's off to another resort for us probably. We'll see...maybe someone else will cancel and there'll be a room for us. A girl can dream, right?

I guess when it comes to WDW though, where you stay at night doesn't matter as much as where you go during the day. It'll be my mom and sister's first visit to WDW, so it'll be neat to see it through their eyes - but it's a lot of work to do all the planning.

Thanks again for the helpful tips!

Not picking a fight here.......but not all people looking to rent points are unreliable. Unfortunately, there are those out there that give everyone a bad name, but it can work both ways.

Yes, people who have experience are much easier to do business with, but there is no way for them to get experience if people don't help them out in the beginning. It's like you can't get a credit card because you don't have any credit yet.

We rented pts for last year from a DVC member from the UK and everything went smoothly. We used paypal for the money transfers and we communicated thru email, fax and snail mail. It was not any harder than renting from a US DVC member.

You can get experience with DVC without renting. Reading and posting here are the best ways to gain experience. We have had people who have posted on the DVC board that they want to rent out their points and ask how to do it. Then they go over to the rent/trade board and try to rent points. This example is an invitation to a disaster for everyone.

The moral of the story is that there is plenty of opportunity to gain experience without doing any renting.

As someone who has rented points before, my first criteria before I will rent from someone is the number of their posts and the intelligence level of their post. I hope that doesn't come off rude, but the sharper the poster, the easier the experience. I do not understand why some posters don't research this board before asking about certain things. Also, I make sure that what I ask about is what I am willing to do. To me, there is no going back once you request to rent points. In other words, it is also the renter's duty to be responsible and respectful of the DVC'ers time and effort.
