Renting points poll

Should unused points be rented?

 • Book any time (11 months out, Christmas), and sell for as much as you can (Ebay...)

 • Book only at 7 months, any season, sell for as much as you can

 • Book only at 7 months, non-prime season, sell for about $10 per point

 • Let your points expire, renting is unfair.

An active thread about "Price Gouging" prompted this question. What are your thoughts about renting points that you can't use but will expire this year? (have been previously banked or it's too late to bank)

Shouldn't you have a 5th choice: Banking your points? You know, letting them expire {that's just plain dumb for what they cost you} is one option to not renting them to someone else, but so is banking.

Good Point, I've changed my original post to eliminate keep banking piece out.

I just rented out two years worth of points because DW and I are spending our 25th in Fiji, where DVC points are worthless. So I advertised on the rental board that the points were available at $10 per point.

Prospective renters contacted me, and I made reservations on their behalf. Some were for less than 7 months out, but some were more than 7 months out. I just made the reservations for whenever they wanted, subject to availability. I'm happy with the way this worked out, and I think the renters are too. As far as I'm concerned, this was a win-win situation.

And this is probably the way most rental transactions take place. But none of the poll choices cover this. They all seem to imply that you make reservations then sell them. Which of these am I supposed to vote for?

This poll needs work, IMHO. It's totally flawed.

Interesting excercise though not applicable as DVC could only legally allow the first. They only thing they could legally limit would be special season lists, lotteries and the like.

You left out the never rent points, use them all myself option! LOL!!!

None of the choices apply to the way I feel about it. I don't mind if people rent points for $10 here or for whatever they can get on Ebay. I don't care if AFTER the points are rented if reservation is made at the 11 month, 7 month, or even 2 weeks before the renter vacations. What I don't like is that people are making reservations for peak times of the year/holidays, never intending to use the points, then renting the week on Ebay. I'm sorry, but I don't think that this is what was intended under the contract.

We don't ever plan on renting points, we don't have enough! Their mine, all mine!!

I have been renting points for 2 years, but for a specific reason. I have been lucky enough to be able to afford to purchase into DVC to take my four children to Disney every year. But what if my children get older and they are not as fortunate? I have purchased a large number of points that I am renting until each child turns 30 years old. At that time I will give them each a seperate contract of points for them to use with their family. By then I will have paid for all the points. I feel I am helping people who want to go at a price that is less than Disney direct and it is helping me as well.

Not sure how to vote. If I had points that I could not use, why would I make a reservation before I found someone interested in renting the points from me? I have never used eBay for anything. Besides, don't we already have a rent/trade board that can handle our needs?

I see no problem with renting someone points if I can not use them and the points can not be banked. I nearly had that last year, but secured a trip for us at the last minute. I could also see where someone had a trip scheduled, had to cancel last minute and was past banking deadlines -- why not try to rent the points out and let someone else enjoy WDW?

It also seems that renting points to cover the cost of taking a DCL cruise is the smart approach given the rather unfavorable point chart for DCL.

I would rent to a member for less than I would to a non-member. $10 per point seems like a ceiling price to be asking, but I have seen it posted on another site as "the going rate" -- my cost is certainly much less.

I was particularly impressed with one of our fellow DISers who chipped in a few points to help a fellow member who found themselves point shy. Not sure how that would fit in this poll, but it sure is the "neighborly" thing to do!

I had the same problem with this excersise. I have never had to do it yet, but I would definately just rent the points for a reservation wherever the renter wanted and what was available.

I didn't vote yet, but would like to put in my 2 cents.
I originally was going to rent my points to help pay for a DCL cruise next year. All that has now changed. My DD16 is going to Italy next year with her Italian class. I'm going with her(yay). That translates to no Disney for Sheri next year. Coincidentally, my SIL, BIL, nephew, his wife and 2 daughters want to go to Disney next year. I just made reservations for them using my points. While I cannot afford to give the points away, I am "renting" them for the cost of dues only. My family still saves a huge bundle over rack rates, I don't lose my points, and I get to recover the cost of dues, which will help with the Italy fund.
I think each situation is obviously different, but I do not agree with people who intentionally make reservations at peak times with the sole intent of renting the points.

I am hoping you purchased seperate contracts for each child. If you just have one contract with many points you can't break them up.
