Renting points from DVC members?

Just a quick note to stick up for us new DVCers..I am new to the boards, am going to have 400+ points to rent, but I am very honest and reliable

I do however understand the reason for looking at post count.

Personally, I think the best method of reassurance is to exchange phone #s in a PM and actually talk to the person before making the deal. Although it is still easy to be duped by a person over the phone, you can get a much better idea of who that person is...

When I referred to a low post count I meant a really low post count, like below 5 post. And you also need to take into account the "Join Date" as well.

Hi everyone. I agree that many posts is one way to rule out a "scam artist", but I don't think a small number of posts necessarily says anything about someone (like me!).

I'm renting points for the first time, and I'd never posted here before deciding this board would be a good place to hook up with a Disney lover who wanted my points. I'm actually here in this section because I wanted to find a rental agreement template that would give my buyer a little additional peace of mind. I'm glad the buyer I found doesn't have a bias against me for a low post count.

I was out on the rental board yesterday, and one person had posted about 20 posts to different people...all they said was "I PM'd you". He was responding to both people who had points for rent and those who wanted to rent. He's now got a pretty impressive post count, but I'd hesitate to work with him.

So, anyway, give those of us who are a little less active a chance, guys! Most people who have points to rent love Disney whether they post a lot or not, and that says something about our characters (I hope)!

Thank you so much Y ASK! I am grateful to have a little more knowledge!

Just a reminder that your renter will need all of the information Y ASK informed you of, but some of that information is your preference (smoking/non smoking, close to pool, etc.) and all your renter can do is ask for these when booking, but it is not a guarantee and don't fault the renter if the room is not perfect. I hope it ALL goes well for you and you have a great trip.

I don't think that anyone here intimated that a low post count signifies that a person is dishonest or a scam artist (just that you have less of a sense of them). I think that the point is that someone who has a lot of posts here is one thing to take into account as a positive indication.

I rented points once, when I ended up with points that I could not use, but had to be used by a certain date due to a cancelled reservation. The transaction was with someone on these boards, and went very well for both parties.

I was wondering how many people have rented points before, and how was your service? I was wondering if anyone ever had to sign some kind of contract just to make sure that they weren't shafted. I am just a little paranoid, that is all.

While I suspect that the majority of rentals are accomplished without any formal contract, our DVC contracts do state that a contract be used for rentals. The contract goes on to state that if a contract is NOT used, that all reservations made using points will expect that guests follow all rules and regulations of the resort and DVC. (Rules are things like no pets allowed, no open fires on balconies or in rooms, no clothing on railings, no signage in windows, no commercial use, etc.)

I'd think it would be prudent for members to prepare some sort of contract (even if it's thru email) to let their renters know about expectations and I'd expect that most renters would want something in writing explaining cancellation policies, payment expectations, etc.

A contract may or may not easily offer financial protection in all instances, but it would certainly offer peace of mind and serve as a reminder of all expectations. If, as a renter, you want a contract- insist on it. If, as a member you want to follow DVC policy with a contract , insist on it.

If it's not important to either party then ignore the policy and the advice! :smooth:

I'm a first timer...renting 4 nights of points from a member the first week in May- and I could only find a couple of previous posts for the member. The member asked that I pay in full as the rental was less than 60 days out. I called the DVC line and they confirmed that all was in my name etc. I sent a check to the member and they sent the confirmation to me once the check cleared. Very easy.

IMO the members are doing the renters a favor by renting the points and should be treated appropriately.

Thanks for all your great tips. I am about to close and become a new DVC member. :cool1: I will be getting some 04 points that I can't use :guilty: and will need to rent rather quickly (expire 1/31/06). I appreciate all of your comments ..I only hope my low post count won't hurt me!!

Does anyone have a sample contract I can use???

I am renting points for our stay in Oct. from a DVC/DISboard member. I was curious/hesitant at the beginning because this was my 1st transaction and had a lot of questions.

The person I am dealing with understood my hesitation and went above and beyond to answer my ?'s and to help me relax about the situation. She was also extremely patient as I had a couple of delays in getting payment to her. Speaking to her on the phone made a big difference! Once I spoke with her I realized the person I was dealing with, which was exactly what I had hoped. A genuine "Disney lover" like me, similar interests and overall friendly and helpful. I feel completely comfortable with the transaction and got to stay someplace I would not have been able to without renting points here.

I guess you have to have a degree of trust that people will do what they say they will do and have faith in that. Just my 2 cents worth. :wave2:

Welcome Cam2Mike! I don't think your low post count will hurt if you keep coming back and visiting the forum and responding to what ever thread you like. Like I said earlier in this thread, when I say low post count, I mean really low. Also, as thelionqueen found out that by asking questions about the process, the renter will become comfortable with the process. You just need to make sure you can answer those questions and if you can't then let them know that you can't. Just tell them that you'll get back to them shortly and call MS and ask. It never hurts to call and ask. Or come here to the boards and ask. We'll be glad to help :).
