Have been checking into renting points from owners.
Has anyone done this before, and is it safe.
What would be the safest way to go about this without getting scamed.
thanks

This was actually how we ended up being dvc members. We rented points one year and it worked very well.

I think it's very safe but it does require a bit of trust. I felt safe renting from a member of these boards and I've never heard of anyone getting scammed.

Please realize though there is a huge element of trust. The member will be in control of the reservation, disney will not deal with you only them.

Also I suggest going to the dvc forum and reading up on renting points.
Most dvc members here are very helpful and happy to answer any specific questions you have.

Hi,

I've been to wdw many times, but just heard about renting DVC points. I found the link to dvcrequest, and wondered how many people have used it...

Also, wondering if I am figuring it right...if the property is 56 points for when we are staying and they "charge" $13 per point, it would only cost $728 to stay there? Nothing else?
Sorry, very new to this!!!

I have done this twice. Studios at OKW and VWL. Worked great for me, and I think the owners were happy to help me with my vacation. The rooms were so nice, it was great to have more room and atmosphere for the price. Read mousesavers.com for more information on renting points. The price can't be beat.

I actually did this at quite a discount, I think it was because the members points were expiring.:confused3 But I needed a reservation within 30 days and all discounted rooms were sold out.

You got it. Generally no other fees (that i can think of). Some folks may want to pay for extra mousekeeping as dvc members do not get daily maid service.

We are currently renting points from a DVC member and so far so good. We paid $10 a point and have a contract with the owner. I was real worried at first but I have constant contact with her. I have both her cell and home number. When she made our reservations I was on a threeway call so that I could hear and confirm. We paid X amount upon confirmation from Disney on the Reservations and have to pay the balance within 45 days of arrival. I send her money ever so often in the way of a bank money order so that I can keep a record of the money...just incase ;) We were going on vacation in June no matter what but decided to look into the renting points thing. We ended up staying at the Boardwalk for the same amount that it would have cost us to stay at a value resort but could have stayed for less at a different Villa. I really wanted to stay on the Boardwalk :goodvibes!!

There would be no more charges.... Also you would do well to check out the DVC rental/trade forum here on the DIS. You should be able to find points for rent around $9-10 point right now.

Rented points from the same DVC member several times. First time was very skeptical but never had a problem. Member always keep us updated through emails and was very helpfull. Going again in June and everything is in place. I think it's the only way to go. You get to stay in a great resort and enjoy all the benefits without being a member.....:goodvibes

Here are a few tips on renting.
  • Try to stay away from people with low post count.
  • Ask for referrals of other Disboard members. Make sure they have been around for a bit.
  • If you are worried, work through PayPal so that you have somebody to help you in the event things start looking bad
  • Be sure to ask about cancellation policy, terms of payment, etc.

When you rent a reservation from a member (you really aren't renting points because points are worthless to you), it's not like getting a reservation directly from Disney. The member may offer no cancellation policy (kind of like Priceline - you bought it, it's yours). They set the payment terms.

Housekeeping is very different because this is a time share. No rollaways or cots are provided. Occupancy is strictly limited. You don't get daily housekeeping. If you stay seven nights or fewer, you'll get your towels changed out and your trash removed on day 4. No bed making, no vacuuming, no clean sheets, etc for seven nights or less. If you stay eight nights or more on day 4, you get a full housekeeping service and on day 8 you get your trash removed and your towels replaced. There are no free upgrades and no free dining, "kids stay and play for free" or 40% off.

You can't just ask for more towels or more shampoo, conditioner or shower gel. You have to pay for extras.

It can be a great way to have a wonderful vacation, but it will be very different from booking directly with Disney.

If you want to add the dining plan you will have to work that out with the person you are renting from as, it has to be paid in full when you book it and it must be booked 48 hours prior to arrival.

Also you can not ask for an upgrade, DVC does not upgrade unless there is an issue with the room and they have to do it.

You need to find someone you are comfortable working with as it a private agreement between two people, and should any problem arise Disney will not intervene.

As Deb stated it can save you money, but it is very different from booking with Disney.

Also with the discounts of up to 40% that Disney is offering you need to crunch the numbers.

Also many DVC resorts book up 11 months in advance and again at 7 months, so it might involve advance planning to get what you want.

We are renting points through dvcrequest.com for our upcoming trip in March. We are staying at the Beach Club Villas in a 2 bedroom villa. So far everything is going great. I called dvcrequest last week to add the deluxe dining plan, and within the week I received a confirmation email & my credit card was charged for the plan by Disney. I did tons of research and number crunching, and the price I paid to rent points is still A LOT cheaper than I would've paid with any of the current discounts, considering that there is only one child in our party, we are staying during peak season, and we knew that we only wanted to stay at the Beach Club.

The person renting the points, if they use paypal, its better for all too.

Check out the stickies at the top of the DVC Rent/Trade Board for information on the process and rules for posting your rental request, and if you have questions, ask the good folks on the DVC boards for help. I'll move this over to the DVC-Planning board for you. :)

What is the difference between renting and getting a transfer? I am a SSR DVC member but just found about renting points. I am going to be booking a vacation very soon and would rather buy points from an existing DVC member (rather than buying the 24 one-time-use points from Disney). By renting I can get more than 24 extra points and have a nicer and/or longer vacation. :yay:

So I actually have two questions:
1 - is the advantage of a transfer that I have control of the reservations?
2 - if I rent and don't get a transfer, then do I end up with two reservations? and how does Disney reservations feel about that? (not a big deal, a pita,...)

Thanks
Shay (MinMinn)

And some members have been burned by Paypal.

Curious - how can the member get burned by Paypal? Does Paypal work like a credit card company and err on the side of the complaintant and reverse the charge at first report while it investigates?

Just trying to learn...
