Renting Points Basics

I'm a newbie, so I'm sorry if this question is a bit naive, or possibly stupid! I'm interested in joining DVC, but being a cautious type, I'd like to get my toes wet. So my question is, if I would like to rent points for example, early December 2008 for AKV, Savannah view, 5 nights starting Sunday, what would my chances be of actually getting this? I know it is too early now to rent, but I like to plan waaaaay in advance! Also, can you tell me what it means when a posting says "Bump"? Thanks. You guys are great, a real close community.

My guess is that your chances would be pretty good. You'll want to begin asking to rent in early January because that is 11 months prior to early December 2008. There are some threads that give the pros and cons of renting - I bet somebody else wil know where they are and post a link or two for you to read.

When a post says bump it is our way of putting that thread back on the "top" of the page. These forums can get pretty busy, and are displayed as latest post on the top of the page, with older threads falling down the list. It may not take long befor a particular thread is relegated to the 2nd page, and once out of sight - out of mind. Bumping helps a thread get noticed again.

Welcome to the DIS boards and keep reading, you'll learn a lot here! Who knows, you might even up being comfortable enough to buy DVC without a pre-visit. Many of us did just that, buying in sight unseen, and have never regretted it.:woohoo:

Thanks. I've been reading the boards in depth and trying to get a feel for it. One thing is definite: the Disney magic definitely has worn off on the folks here, as they all are so nice and helpful!

You would need to find an AKV owner willing to "rent points" since you are talking about one of the highest demand reservation times of the year for DVC due to the low points and Christmas decorations around WDW. And you are asking for the popular DVC vacation of Sunday - Friday to avoid weekend points. So that will limit you a bit since AKV has only been on sale for a couple of months now. But your odds are probably good, especially if you aren't locked into Savanna View.

No, you really aren't all that far in advance since those reservations would need to be made the first couple weeks of January. Being an advance planner is very important if you join DVC if you are picky about resorts and booking classifications.

Also, can you tell me what it means when a posting says "Bump"?

PSC gave you a good answer on this. In order to post, you have to put in at least one word. "Bump" tells everyone that the purpose of the post was to move the thread back to the top of page 1.

Good luck in your DVC decision process! :)

I'm moving this to the planning board, as it seems to fit better there. The post seems more about the chance of securing a reservation than the actual mechanics of renting :)

The odds depend upon what you are willing to pay. Average price for all rentals on the DIS boards is about $11-12/point. If you want to pay less than that, you have a chance, but it'll be harder to get a reservation at that price. On the other hand, if you are willing to pay more than $11-12, your odds are much better.

Wow. Thanks. I'm really learning alot. I figured it would be easier to get a reservation then since the rates are lower (indicating lesser demand), and it's listed by Disney as a week of lower attendance at the parks.

You will find that WDW busy times and DVC busy times don't always line up. Those lower point weeks in December are in very high demand. One of the reasons is because the parks aren't so very crowded!

Food & Wine Festival is extremely popular with DVC owners too. DVC Resorts book up during this low crowd time of the year at WDW.

In fact, the entire 4th quarter can be a little hard to get reservations on short notice (less than 7 months).

Thanks again. I chose early December because I was at Disney last year at that time, and the crowds were very small. Nine people total in the audience for "Sounds Dangerous," and I was the ONLY person in the after-show room! Would it be easier getting a reservation for January (of 2009)?

I may be wrong, but the AKV rentals or points for rent Thread that I have read are going for $13-14 per point. There is one now for $13. I didn't check the entire first page. This resort is renting for more. This is a new resort, charging top dollar.

As long as it isn't the first two weeks of Jan (meaning around the first and the marathon).

And, who sees Sounds Dangerous anyway? I thought it was always that empty.

DVC reservations for members peak whenever points are low.

:rotfl: The park had just opened, and I was on my way to Star Wars, when a cast member standing outside "Sounds Dangerous" said the show was starting right now. So I walked inside, and was shocked to find a virtually empty theater! It wasn't a great show, but since the attendance was so slow that day, I saw every single attraction except the Rock 'N' Roller Coaster and the children's theater! So I didn't miss a better show by going to "Sounds Dangerous." I just wish I could have seen "Fantasmic" twice (sat in the front row, by the way).
