Renting Points 11 Months Out

I put in my request in December with a points broker for the Poly (Studio Lake View) for a planned stay Jan 1 to 6, 2018. I know that today is the first day DVC owners could possibly make their bookings, but I am still super excited that I am within the window and will hopefully have a real reservation soon. Does anyone have experience with how close to the 11 month booking window the broker might have points available to rent?

In case you don't know how renting points from a broker works, the brokers do not have their own points to rent. They are the middle man between people like you who want to rent and owners like me, who have extra points that we need to rent out. So, to answer your question, there is no way to know. The broker will have to secure an owner who has Poly points to rent out, and you have to be the first renter on their list. The problem is that Poly is a new resort, and owners may not be ready to rent their points out yet.

Good luck to you. I do know that one broker has stopped taking requests for Christmas Poly reservations, as they just don't have enough Poly owners who want to rent out their points.

Frankly, it's unlikely it will be soon.

Most of the brokers have a backlog of requests within the 11-7 month window. Last I checked (week or so ago?), one of the majors that lists out their needs was looking for more than 11,000 Poly points for bookings in the 11-7 month window.

Be prepared to wait, and be prepared to maybe not get the rental. Your dates include marathon, and that's a weekend that books in home resort. But there aren't a lot of Poly owners renting compared to other resorts that are older and sold out.

Is it possible to rent any DVC points for any resorts seven months out? We often can't plan our trips too far in advance

It's possible, but generally you'll be looking at Saratoga, Old Key West and Animal Kingdom Villas inside of 7 months. For fall (late September-marathon) you may not be able to get a room for length of desired stay via point rental; DVC owners often have to waitlist during that stretch of time to get rooms even before 7 months.

DVC works best for owners who can plan at least 7 months out, but more frequently 11 months out. Renters are subject to the same success variables booking.

We rented points a few days after the 11 month window opened and got 8 nights at Boardwalk Villas for last November the week before Thanksgiving. We got an answer within 1 day or so after the request.

Every now and then, you get lucky. Right after Thanksgiving, I was able to book a standard studio at the Poly for 4 nights this month. But my dates were flexible - I basically just found someone with Poly points and said tell me when it is available and I will make it work!

There are always villas available somewhere at 7 months and depending on what time of year you are looking at you can generally get something at most resorts. It helps if you are flexible about your room types and categories, at BLT for instance a standard view studio will sell out far faster than a 2-bedroom lake view. Then places like SSR and OKW tend to have some availability with short notice during all but the most busy times of the year. Renting points though you are at the mercy of both resort availability and the points to rent it being available. Luckily there is usually someone like me looking to rent out some SSR points to cover a cruise ;)

It almost certainly helps that January post-marathon is low season.

Between October-marathon, availability can be a mess.

I disagree with the bolded statement above. During high demand DVC seasons it is often impossible to get a full week of successive nights at 7 or less months.

My family did the DVC tour this past December, not really knowing what it was. Once we figured out it was a timeshare, we weren't interested. However, the sales people were really touting the new villas at Poly, especially the new split bathrooms they have. I'd imagine that because of location and their refreshed interior that they may be hard to get. Coincidently, we also learned during the sales pitch about DVC rental agents.

So, We tried the DVC Rental Store, mainly because they will check availability for your dates without a deposit. But once they determine there is availability, we put down $100, and they went to work for our first choice, which was 6 nights at WL Boulder Ridge for Christmas. It took two weeks to match our points request with a DVC member, and linking the DVC confirmation to our My Disney Experience was a breeze.

We did ours right at the 11 month mark because our available travel dates are always fixed to just the same few weeks each year, due to my wife and my careers. You pay a little bit of a premium for reserving that far in advance, but it was worth it to secure what we want, and it's still 50% off rack rate for a standard WL room for the same dates!

Wow, they're looking for a LOT of Poly points! Are other resorts (e.g. BLT, BCV, BWV, VGF) in similar demand or is Poly more popular for some special reason?

It is variable. They don't list all the requests, because in a lot of cases people are requesting things that are not available (ie, AKV Value, VGF Studios most of fall). Because Poly is big and has primarily studios, and is not sold out, it takes longer for those rooms to be fully unavailable.

they're also after a lot of AKV points. Again, big resort, takes a bit to be wholly unavailable for Standard or Savannah.

But because Poly is not sold out, has mostly new/recent buyers who want to use their own points, and a fair number of small contracts, there just aren't a lot of people renting their points there, either.

You'd be better off looking for an individual if you want to secure Poly or Grand Floridian. The rental sites just aren't as competitive for those points and demand exceeds supply.

BTW, I looked. Same broker needs 17k BLT points. They're looking for fewer points at Epcot resorts and VGF, but I suspect that's more that the rooms aren't available so they aren't listing the home resort requests.

We got the Poly for a stay last week through a broker at six months out. So, once the window opened that any DVC owner can book, it still took a few weeks. We put our request in right around seven months out.

I was waiting almost a month with a broker to get a rental at the Poly for the end of October. I put my request in at exactly 11 months out. Eventually, I found a member here on the boards to rent to me, and withdrew my reservation request from the broker.

I am excited! But obtaining the reservation was more difficult than I anticipated.
