Renting out points - Worthwhile?

Yes, Marylyn, She was very honest!;) I arrived, had a room.. it was my birthday, we had a wonderful time! Do you remember?

This may sound silly but do I really have to worry there may not be a room? Any reason to think otherwise?

Please don't let this comment scare you. Has your DVC owner answered all your questions? Do you have a phone number? Do you have a confirmation in your name? Way to get in touch...I have rented timeshares in Aruba, Hawaii 3 times, DVC never a problem. I rent DVC from time to time. Have a good trip, there is trust on both sides, the owner is trusting to you to not destroy the room.

For those who don't know / didn't catch it -

icydog = Marylyn = the owner kimberh rented from. They are "playing " with each other on this thread.

This is a private transaction between two individuals. At all times the individual you rent from will be in control of the reservation. That means they COULD CONCEIVABLY cancel it at the last minute and abscond with your money - leaving you standing at the front desk with no reservation.

If you rented from here and read the stickies and are comfortable with your owner, you might better spend your time worrying about what will happen if you get hit by lightening on vacation. This happens so rarely it isn't worth worrying about.

I think you've seriously underestimated the risks of renting DVC.

There are many less obvious risks to renters, for example: those visiting Saratoga have to be careful to avoid heat prostration in the oven-like elevators, people at Old Key West should be concerned about otter attacks, anyone at Beach Club should beware of hotdog-crazed alligators, Wilderness Lodge visitors can be scalded by unpredictable geysers, Animal Kingdom guests should be on the look out for hyena-induced stampedes, Boardwalk patrons need to be afraid of The Shining twins, Vero guests should worry about infected turtle bites, and at Hilton Head everyone -- and I do mean everyone -- should stay alert for packs of wild, rabid dogs.

OMG!!! This is one of the most funny things I've read on DIS in a while! Thanks for the laughs!! :lmao: :rotfl2:

Sorry CarolMN, That was certainly not my intention.

Or mine- Sorry to all those who don't know me- we were just fooling around. Kim tried DVC on for size and love it enough to buy her own contract. Now, if she has extra points, she rents her own points out. :woohoo:

Well, yes you can rent.
Whether it's worth it? That's a personal thing.

I bought my points in 2000 and had a wonderful time using every single point that I decided to add on in thoughts of upgrading usage for a future family.

In 2003 I had a personal situation that prevented me from using all my points. So I've resorted to renting out most of my points and luckily found out that the experience was quite rewarding for both parties (myself and the renters).

And now I still occasionally rent some of my points if necessary.

This year we are planning a european trip instead of our twice yearly disney trip. So instead of banking them I decided to rent them out. And again I've been lucky enough to find great renters...

I don't buy extra points to rent out but every now and then I decide to go somewhere else (cruise, europe, NY, etc.) that I know it'd be wiser for me to rent them out than to keep banking them.

Plus when I bought my first points my guide told me "Think about the future. How many points do you think you would need when you have a family.". So now that I don't have a family yet, I have to rent them out. When God is willing and we have a family, I might use all my points and then some... :)

That's a long winded way to say, yes you can rent them out. Just don't intentionally buy points to profit from it... or you'll get in trouble with a disney police.

PS: The key to renting is clear contract and no surprises.
I've had a renter who had a personal issue came up and kindly asked me if I could rerent the points. Our agreement clearly stated that I would do so and if I can find a renter he will get his $ back. But he also understood that if nobody picked it up, he'll be out the $. No surprises.
We were both fortunate that someone did rent out the points and I was able to give him his $ back.

Good luck with your decision!

I have rented out points before and never had a problem. I think the people whom I rented to would agree. Communication is key. Good communication=happiness all around.
