Renting from a Dis'r.

I am not in the market to rent at this time but will be thinking about it for our 11/07 trip. I am investigating buying in but am being cautious. I have picked out a DVC resort based on the DVC website pictures for OKW.

How reliable do you think a DVC renter posting on the Dis would be with a low number posts?

Lately I have seen alot of points/ressie for rent from newbies to the Dis. Unless they are just registering under a different/new name to hide their old identity. But I would think Capitol One could fix that :rotfl:

When we go in 11/07 we may just stay at POR (our afforable favorite).
Skip a day at the parks & see if DVC will let us schedule a tour of several DVC resorts on that day.

The only tour that DVC does is of the model currently at SSR. You might be able to see other rooms on your own if you ask at the front desk. Just depends how busy they are. You can walk through the other DVC resorts, though.

Rooms at BCV, BWV, VWL and SSR are very similar with only very minimal difference structurally, but very different in furnishings.

I would get references or check their previous posts. Some may be starting to rent because of the one transfer rule being enforced. The renter -rentee reationship has more work to do than it use to, so I would make sure that the DVC owner is going to make your Magical Express and DDP reservations for you if you are going to need those. Mail you a confirmation with your name on it.

In the year and a half that I've been on the DIS, I've become aware of three situations where someone was having trouble with the owner they were renting from. In all three of those cases, the DVC owner had very few posts, and in two of the three the problem was that the owner had no clue what they were doing.

Everything worked out in one case. I never heard the result in one case, although I think it went okay in the end. The third case is still pending, but I'm hopeful it will turn out okay.

I have yet to see a dishonest owner, but I have seen several absolutely clueless ones.

OTOH, I've seen a few unscrupulous people trying to rent.

From your sig it looks like you go to WDW about every year. Why not become a DVC owner yourself? We did POR and CSR the two years prior to joining and we are so, so happy with DVC now. Wish I would have done it three years ago!

See, if it was me and I have rented, I would deal with someone with some posts. I have just had a hum digger of a case with someone trying to rent, a con artist if you ask me. I have never heard so many sad stories in all my life and still no money or contract. To rent a room is business and Disney treats it as such as we as DVcers need to do the same. It's not to be taken personally but as a business agreement. You don't pay, you don't have a room, just like at Disney!!

In my opinion, I would only rent from someone with an established presence on the Disboards. If I'm going to give my money to someone, I want to know that they have an established history and reputation here.

On the flip side, I'm sure a DVC member renting points or a reservation wants to know that they're dealing with an honest and well established Disboard member as well.

So an established history and reputation works both ways. Less risk = fewer complications = happy people! :sunny:

I agree. I've seen several posts where certain dates are wanted and the owner offers some of the points, or says they will check on Monday (for dates that an experienced owner knows would be sold out), or asks if the person wanting the ressie has checked themselves (not possible). None of these are malicious, just clueless and potentially will lead to a LOT of frustration on both sides because they will not lead to a successful reservation. Generally the clueless folks seem to have very few posts.

Here I was concerned that my posting would be mis-interpreted. You folks are spot on.
I seem to like the exterior appearance of OKW & WL. I have no desire to stay at GF. Don't get me wrong it's a beautiful resort and I love visiting there when it as all decorated at CHRISTmas it's just not my cup of tea.

Starbox: You are correct. We are very close to paying off the mortgage and will not finance the DVC purchace and are looking into it now.

JimMia: There are also clueless renters such as I.

Disney-Super-Mom: I have to agree. The more time people spend reading & posting on the Dis the more informed they seem to be.

I know there is one instance going on now where the renter wanted VBW and has ended up with VBC in what I believe to be a lack of knowledge on the part of the rentee. I am sure the renter will have a great vacation.

Santa,
If you have a question, just ask it, as you have done in this instance and you will get several honest opinions and answers that will educuate you into an informed renter that will have a great experience. When you are ready to rent, I am sure you will find the right person and at the right price.

:tinker: :tinker: :tinker:

Renting is find but watch out you will get addicted, I did and now own.

Agree here.

I do have a few questions:

1. Will the reservation be made in my name if I am renting points? If not how are they made and what do I do at check in?

2. When do I need to add on the DDP?

3. Once I enter the window of opportunity to make ADR's will I have any problem in doing so if the reservation is not in my name?

4. Is their any discounts as a renter that I would be entitled to while staying as a guest of a DVC member?

That's it FOR NOW but I hope you all are open to additional questions.

Thanks in advance.

That depends on the owner you rent from, but generally the ressie would be in your name. It would have to be in your name by your checkin date, or you would not be able to check in.

Keep in mind, however, that the ressie is still totally under the owner's control from the time it's booked until you check in.

2. When do I need to add on the DDP?
Before you go to Disney. I've heard 3 days and I've heard 5. I've also heard isolated incidents where someone has added DDP the day OF checkin.

However, YOU can't add DDP. The DVC owner has to call MS for you and add it, so I'd add it as soon as you are sure you will want it. You don't pay for it until checkin. The same is true of DME; the owner has to add it for you. Many owners and renters use conference calls for stuff like that, so everyone's on the same page.

3. Once I enter the window of opportunity to make ADR's will I have any problem in doing so if the reservation is not in my name?
Probably not. Anyone can make ADRs, and you certainly don't have to be staying onsite to make them. The only situation you'd experience difficulty should be in trying to make 180+10 ADRs. Regular ADRs within 180 days, it should not matter.

4. Is their any discounts as a renter that I would be entitled to while staying as a guest of a DVC member?
Not really. You'll get all of the onsite benefits, obviously (free parking at theme parks, DDP, DME, etc.), but most member discounts require showing your membership card. Your room key will say DVC member, and there have been isolated cases where someone has gotten something, but I would not plan on it.

JimMIA,

Thanks for the fast and thorough reply. Since we plan on first having a regular reservation at a moderate I can make all my reservations using the 180 + 10 window at that time.

Can I just have the owner make the ME arrangements for a return to the airport only? We won't need for her to arrange our inbound transportation for us.

Once again thanks.

Hey Cheryl,
There's no problem w/adding DME for only one leg of the trip. the member would just need you flight info and the party names.
