Renting electric scooters?

Thank you Suzanne - that's a big help. I believe there's a separate motor cruiser which goes to CR & FW - I'll just have to avoid the smaller motor launches.

Found a great new avatar by the way

You are correct, you can take the larger boats to the park as long as the water level is okay and sometimes that just means allowing other people to enter the boat before you do. . ..

Are the boats that go to the Boardwalk from MGM or EPCOT are they ECV accessible? Thinking of eating at Cape May or Beaches n' Cream and was wondering if I can just take the boat or is there a path? I don't mind going alone (letting the rest of my party 2 kids and my DSis) take the boat and me riding over if that is possible? Always wanted to go to the Boardwalk and never seemed to have the time and wanted to make the time on this vacation. TIA:thumbsup2

This was supposed to be a reply to post #25 but it keeps appearing before the question - times are wrong - it's 17.08 here (12.08 Florida time) but it says it's 03.49 pm which I don't think is even a possible time!!! !

My reply has popped up before your question msr709 - don't know how that's possible but there seem to be problems with the board today and the times are all wrong!! :confused3

I believe they are ECV accessible but, bizarrely, not for the ECVs that you can rent from Disney because theirs have a bar along the front which causes problems. The ECVs you rent offsite seem to be ok though.

I am renting mine from Care Medical for 5 days in November, the cost is $150 for the week. The scooter will be waiting for me at the hotel when I check in, and it will be with me the entire vacation. I dont have to worry about getting to the parks and hoping there is one available. Plus I hear that its cheaper then renting from the parks

Thats fine, I plan on renting one from outside source. Speaking of that I just noticed that Walker's scooters have a headlight, the ones from Randy did not, I would so much prefer to have the headlight. Also someone mentioned the battery being heavy, I did not have to take the battery out of the scooter to charge in the room, do you have to take the battery out of the Walker ones to charge? :confused3 Decisions, decisions. . :rolleyes1

We have rented from Walker Medical in Orlando/Kissemee and they have been great!! It is waiting for you when you arrive and they pick it up after you leave. It has been a lifesaver for my Dad!!!

also, if you check the disABILITIES FAQs thread (near the top of this board), there is a section about transportation. That includes information about the boats and which are accessible.

The Friendship boats that go between the Studio, Epcot and the Epcot resorts (Boardwalk, Beach & Yacht Club, Swan, Dolphin) are ECV accessible.
The ones that go from one part of WS in Epcot to the other side are ECV accessible, but not accessible to the WDW rental ECVs because they have a very low bumper.

When you look at the different websites (there are links in the disABILITIES FAQs thread), you should be able to find out for sure.
Most ECVs don't need the batteries taken out to charge. If you are transporting it in a car and have to lift it, that's when the weight of the batteries makes a difference.

I don't know of any ECV where you have to take the battery out to charge it.

One is where the plug is in the battery itself; for that you can take the battery out and charge it separately or you can leve it in the ECV.

The other, more common, is where the plug is in the main part of the ECV and the batteries must be in place to e able to charge them. If you get a special connector you can remove the batteries and charge them separately, but normally this is in special circumstances. (With the ECV I got rid of a few months ago, my supplier made a special connector for me so I could remove only the batteries from the trunk to charge them and could leave the rest of the ECV in the trunk.)

And quite a few nowadays are coming with an "onboard" charger where you plug the attached cord directly into an electric outlet.

This is the one you can hire at WDW

and this is one of the 3 wheeled variety from offsite rentals (they have a basket at the front too - not on this pic for some reason):confused3 .

That was one of the WDW park ECVs
They actually got all new ECVs at all the WDW parks in July 2007. This is a picture of the new ones.

Oh, sorry. I found it on allears and thought I would post it as an example of the 4 wheelers. Sorry - didn't realise it was out of date. Thanks Sue.

just got back from our week at Disney. Mother in law rented an ECV every day that she went into the parks from the park itself. The only problem was a considerable wait 2 mornings when it seemed they didn't have enough staff at the rental area. She said it was worth every penny. She can walk and can get on and off all the rides but has foot problems and walks slowly.
She could never have kept up with us if she had been on foot.
We were very grateful for availability at all the parks!!

That is great that she was able to get one at each park, but that is not always the case, so that is why it is better to rent from off-site, also it is ALOT cheaper to rent from off-site. It can be as much as $15/day cheaper and you don't have to wait for staff.

That's OK. I guess they didn't update their picture.
