Renting DVC

i have never rented DVC points before, so I was wondering if this is possible.

We currently have a package reservation through Disney for January 2016 at Port Orleans and we have already paid about $1500 towards that trip. If we decide to rent points instead to stay at Grand Floridian or Polynesian, I realize I would have to cancel the room portion of our existing reservation. Would Disney then be able to link our existing ADRs to the new DVC reservations? And would the money we already paid be able to be applied to park tickets and the dining plan? (We have used $1200 worth of Disney gift cards so far....so a refund to a credit card wouldn't work.)

Also, we purchased travel insurance through Disney. Is that something that could be applied to the DVC rental, or could that still be applied to our trip? Or would that be a lost expense?

Finally, are there any other expenses I should be aware of if attempting to switch from a package reservation to a DVC point rental reservation?

Thanks

If you booked a package, you have to cancel the whole package. I'm pretty sure you would lose your ADRs because you would no longer have tickets (they are tied to the package). I'm not sure what they would do about refunding Disney gift cards.

Travel insurance would be canceled too.

If you rent DVC, you have to purchase separate park tickets (no package). Some online DVC rental places offer insurance (I think). Not sure how much $ is refunded if you cancel. You can request the dining plan be added to your reservation.

You can link your DVC rental to MDE, but the renter has control of the reservation. You can't add anything (like the dining plan) yourself.

Hope that helps!

ADRs are linked to the My Disney Account, and are independent of a hotel reservation.

If you purchased tickets as part of your package, they would be cancelled when the package is cancelled. Fast Passes (you aren't close enough to have these yet) are linked to tickets, so they would also disappear if your tickets were refunded.

If you purchased tickets outside of your vacation package, they will remain in your My Disney Account.

If you get a refund on anything paid by Disney Gift Card, you'll get a Disney Gift card back.

The owner of the points you are renting can order the dining plan and magic express for you.

Your ADRs will be safe, the whole package would cancel, and I'm sure Disney would be willing to apply the balance towards tickets.

The more difficult may be getting rental reservations at Poly or VGF for the whole time you wish only 5 months out.

I would call MS first, let them know you might have to cancel and what can you get back as credits. Once you have that info, get on the rent/trade boards asap, as others have said its getting tight. Now since your under 7 months there shouldnt be a reason to pay a premium for those points(if the resorts are available) because anyone with any points can now book their.

Do you think that holds true for confirmed reservations? I ask because I have a confirmed VGC reservation in January that I might not make it to. I won't know for a while, but it seemed like if I can't go, maybe I could still rent it out at the high end (provided I find a renter who wants those days), since the rooms are gone.

If your asking about having a premium, I would say no, but that is me. When you get under the 7 month mark, yes you might have those rooms and days, but then it comes down to how long out and are you trying to make money or save from losing money.

Based on current availability you can forget about Grand Floridian, and Poly has better avail but still might have some gaps.

Also remember you are renting from a DVC member not Disney so if you need to change you may lose your money. The Travel Insurance you purchased could not be used for your DVC rental.

You probably wouldn't be able to pay for your DVC rental with Disney Gift Cards. We are renting at VGF for our trip next month. We rented through a family we found on the rent/trade board who had enough points for the room/dates we needed and VGF was their home resort. We purchased our tickets separately from Undercover Tourist. We aren't doing the dining plan since it is simply just way too much food for our family and I couldn't stomach the adult price for my 11y.o.
