Renting DVC Question

Hey Guys! Quick question: My DH and I are looking at renting DVC points for our next stay in June. Has anyone been through this process and did you buy trip insurance to guard against possibly having to cancel the trip? We know we can go during our dates, but it is hurricane season (we also live in gulf coast state) and life can happen. Any advice regarding this would be helpful. Thanks!

I have been to WDW three times and all three times rented points. I did not purchase trip insurance.
I honestly think I should have (just to be on the safe side), and for my next trip next October, I will.

Renting points is definitely the way to go though!!

We rented points through a member here on the Dis and we leave in 2 days!!! :) It has been a wonderful experience for us -- we booked 11 months out and knew our plans wouldn't change, but we also avoided the time of year where we might have weather concerns either on our side or in FL. Most trip insurance companies won't cover rented points...they might sound like they will, but read the fine print or ask them directly and get it in writing. When renting points from a member, your transaction is between two people which is different than just booking a hotel room. There is one company I know of that rents points and offers trip insurance. If you have the opportunity to purchase legit insurance that will cover cancellation for any reason (even with renting points), I would probably do it for your trip since hurricane season is so unpredictable!

I did get trip insurance for our first DVC rental spring 2016. I will say there are def risks to renting even through a broker/rental agency as my reservation was cancelled by the DVC member without anyone knowing. It was discovered when it was missing from MDE. My situation is more of a fluke and it's been mostly fixed now. But unless you are renting from someone you know personally, I'd get the insurance. I think it was about $40 through my homeowners and I only insured the accommodations.

Our 2 upcoming trips will be our 5th and 6th times renting DVC points and we've never gotten trip insurance. We've mostly rented through private owners and once through David's. While most of the time you can't cancel or change your dates once booked, occasionally you'll find a private owner who is willing to let you change dates up to a certain point as we have, but I believe they're few and far between.
As we've never gotten the insurance I really have nothing else to offer other than if you can, get it, if just for piece of mind. And I agree with kimberlay, renting DVC is definitely the way to go :thumbsup2
