renting DVC points?

just wondering how easy this is to do?

we are hoping to go for 3 weeks next time, and although i absolutely loved being onsite i'm not sure i want to do the one room with 2 kids for 3 weeks. We thought about staying one week onsite and 2 weeks in an offsite villa or condo, but if we could stay onsite in a DVC then that would be even better.

I do love the idea of a villa but we went for a drive around and TBH i felt the villa areas were a little isolated and also i worry about the little ones with a villa pool, and the fact that there isnt the shallow areas or any of the slides etc that you get with a resort pool.

We would want a one bed villa, as its the kitchen, lounge area and washing facilities we really need and it would be for late september/early october time in 2007, and we would probably still do a week in a normal hotel room, then move to the DVC.

Also can you get AP discounts on the DVC resorts easily, im thinking we may need to pay for some of the time and rent points for the rest. I did look on the best rate program and they were offering SS and OKW at very good rates for february?

If we do want to rent points when would we need to be starting to ask and look for someone to rent from

thanks and sorry for the long post

P.s buying into DVC ourselves is not possible at this time as we don't have that much capital and can't get finance

I went to tagrel's points comparison tool and checked on dates from Sunday, September 23, 2007 thru Friday, October 5, 2007 which is 12 nights. (The less time you spend at DVC in the weekends, the cheaper it would be, this scenario only has 2 weekend nights staying). A one bedroom villa for these dates would be:
OKW = 248 points
BWV = 250 points (standard view)
SSR = 290 points
BWV (pref view), BCV, & VWL = 318 points

Assuming the going rental rate is still in the $10 range you are looking at $2480 - 3180.

If you want a particular resort you would want to start looking for someone to rent from August 2006 to get the 11 month window. October is a popular time at DVC because of F&W so the earlier you get booked the better.

Thanks for that, we would be very happy at OKW as all the DVC resorts look beautiful (i'm hoping a stay through rental will persuade DH to buy :) )

Those are the dates we are looking at staying and 12 nights would be perfect as we would spend the other 9 nights in a value or moderate.

Thanks again

Suzanne

OKW is definitely bigger than BWV.

however you acted like you want to be close to the parks.

BWV you can walk to EPcot and Studios (or take the boat) - bus parking elsewhere

OKW is only bus parking for the parks - it has a boat to DD but that is all.

I would try for BWV standard view.

the Sun-thurs rate is BWV standard view 24 points per night, OKW is also 24 points per night, fri/sat is OKW 56 points per night , BWV 58 points per night.

this is only BWV standard view not preferred - but if you ask early enough and get someone with BWV points - it should not be a problem getting you the standard view.

You can stay at an outside resort for the first week (try for a Sun-to Sun reservation - or at least a Sat to sat) - with sun-sun - you are on the less points immediately, the sat to sat - you would have to add sat night.

thanks, the BW area is fantastic and we would love to stay there, however we were at POFQ this time and did love the location there aswell, especially the boat to DTD. I guess we need to look at the resorts in more detail and make a final decision but we have plenty of time yet

I take it standard view at BWV is like any other resort, ie. parking lot??

Yes, the villas are far from the parking lot. that say - the standard view is not far from the parking at all. the standard view is the parking lot and the main entrance to the resort. there are doors you can easily get back and forth to the parking lot.

the main elevators are off the main lobby on the second floor - far from some of the standard views. all the elevators are together.

BWV has more stuff than OKW - valet parking, room service, etc.

both have bell services.

Yes, standard view is generally parking lot, but not necessarily bad at BWV. If you stayed in a studio at a DVC resort the other nights, you would still save over staying at All stars or PORS, and you could try a different resort for those nine days. I guess I would start the trip in a studio/hotel room and have the last 12 days in the 1 bedroom.

thanks everyone for your help. Have decided that we are definately going to try and rent some points if we can. However looking at the resorts is making me really want to join up as a member :( maybe once we've stayed there DH might be convinced

Just an observation: If you can afford 3 weeks in the World, you can probably afford the upfront DVC costs with buying and financing through Disney...assuming you are otherwise a candidate for DVC and you're not in bankruptcy (but how could you afford 3 weeks if you were?) :confused3

As we are coming from the UK, it is not worth paying for the flights for less than 2 weeks, and we only have major vacations like WDW every other year. You would be surprised how much our travel companies charge us for package holidays so renting points works out really good for us. An example 14 nights at the beach club standard room not villa, for 2 adults, 2 kids, with flights comes in at about $9000, and thats at the cheapest times!

we don't have a very good credit rating at the moment and we don't like getting finance, in a couple of years we will be in a better position to think about finance or a loan and we may have some saved up to put down for our own DVC membership
