Renting DVC points

Yesterday I started looking at the for rent board on the DVC to see if this could be an alternative option for our family of 7 next year.

We have been contemplating either the CR or POLY.
However, when we used the points calculator I saw that we good get a great deal on a 2BR Savannah view at AKL for example which sounds simply magical. The other interest I had was in the VWL.

Of course I have no experience with renting DVC points and worry about how this would work, how you figure out the terms with the owner, how safe it is.
I read the pointers in the sticky but still had some questions.
Once you have confirmation of the reservation in your name, can the owner cancel?

Can any one send me some good pointers?

the DVC owner maintains control of the reservation at all times, until the point you check in (edited to add: because you are not technically renting points, you are renting a reservation.) so theoretically, yes, they could send you the reservation confirmation and then cancel and keep your money...but in practice, this is EXTREMELY rare. you do need to use good judgment though.

renters are also not allowed to call DVC member services to confirm their reservation, so trust will be a factor and you would need to accept that.

renters also need to understand that cancellation policies through renting will likely be very different than going through disney directly.

here is a thread you should definitely read:

If you are considering renting, get references! That will tell you everything. Now, everyone does have to start somewhere. Otherwords, someone will have to have their first rental, but I would ask for references. Talk to them on the phone, get a contract, phone number, address, email address. Make sure that the owner knows that they are the one that has to set up Magical express and the Disney Dining Plan, if you are going to need them.

Many, many renters have had wonderful experiences. I rented before I bought. It was a great experience. She was very knowledgeable and saved me a considerable amount of money.

Good luck with your search.:thumbsup2
