Renting dvc points, when to book?

Again...there's a difference between can and should. I specifically wrote should for a reason and I explained the reason in a subsequent post.
Yeah, your comment wasn't there when I replied to the PP. I should have seen it, but I didn't.

Two years ago we actually got shut out of a Board Walk Standard View Studio a full 11 months out, our DVC gal got on at the crack of dawn to get us 10 days but that many were not available. Rather than going on the wait list and risk getting nothing we bumped up to a Garden View room so naturally we're spoiled now and that's what we get all the time.

We just got a Boardwalk View Studio Feb 019, so more like 10 months but that is a slower time. We are SO excited. First time renting points, our agency has a protection plan for a $1 a point that allows you to cancel and get a refund, the amount depends on the timing of your cancellation. Of course, you don't get the insurance $$ back either, so you're risking that amount for the "peace of mind", which I'm fine with.

For peace of mind book at 11 months out -( that means contacting them at 12 months out)- otherwise you might not get exactly what you want.

Just used David's to book our stay at AKL. Sent my request for a 184 point stay in Jan of 2019 to David's on April 3 2018 and they had it secured for me the next morning.
It went very smoothly, I will use David's again the entire process only took 5 emails to complete. :thanks:

While the OP is looking at May, 2019 and beyond will be tough to get any rentals inside of 11 months due to SWL opening as well as all of the other attractions planned over the next 5 years. Prices are going to go up big time because demand will be through the roof. I imagine that buying through Disney will be just as crazy.

You can put in a request with David’s starting at 12 months but they won’t be able to book obviously until the 11 month mark.

I just used DVC-rental.com today and had two studios at Copper Creek booked within two hours of my request for next January. First time renting points, first time staying at a deluxe. I'm thrilled! One question... I get it about going through the owner/agency for DME and the dining plan, but can I make a room request through Touring Plans?

Rumor is Star Wars Land will open in California in May but not until later in the year in Florida.

Yeah I know it won’t open until later 2019 but my point was the “when to book” time frame is going to get much more uncomfortable for the folks who have rented historically. I’m one of them.

I rented point in February directly from an owner and I could book DME myself as well as make room requests. So, unless it's changed in the past two months, I believe you can.
The only room requests you can make with a DVC rental is with online check in. You cannot call DVC resorts if you aren't the owner of the points used to make the reservation. DVC doesn't accept faxes.

Original post Deleted, as my experience has been different then others and wouldn’t want to get something thinking they would have the same.

This is all great info!

Piggy-backing on the OP, is it generally safer to wait for the 7-month window if I’m looking for a 1BR?

We’re specifically looking for 6 or 7 nights, in late January, in a 1BR at either WL location, BLT, or BC.

Do I need to move quickly? Or can I save a little money and book in June?

I would not expect to get BLT Standard 1BR at 7 months, and BCV might disappear quickly. BRV is highly likely to be there.

I usually rent direct from owners. Payment is usually required a month or two in full after reservation booked. ( depending on owner and how far out reservation )

I have been put on wait lists for rooms. It just depends on a good DVC owner. Most are great and work with you

Usually my cancelation policies are 75 percent back if canceled 30 days before trip.

( speaking of this, does anyone have any trip insurance websites they used or advice? I never needed but going during rainy season so Id like to do research )

Some sell out as soon as the dates open ( only really saw this happen with beach club villas )

Any DVC request you have on rooms, the owner can request for you before check in. Also give them flight information and they will take care of that for you also. They can also do Disney dining for you ( I never have )
The terms you get are very unusual. Not the standard response for renting at all. Most owners do not refund any money if you cancel. Waitlisting is also unusual since it can require more money if more points are used. Lots of owners require full payment once they have made the reservation.

Which is why I said it depends on the owner, how many points they have etc etc. I didn’t realize it wasn’t the norm. I recently waitlisted an extra day. As far as that, As soon as it booked, i paid the difference.

I guess each owner is different. Then again I’ve only had dealings with two and have been working with for years. Someone shouldn’t expect the same results I had, based on the feedback I’ve received that it’s not in the norm to receive those kind of terms.

Deleted the original post as I don’t want people thinking they would have a similar experience

I guess that I must not be a good DVC owner because the lenient terms that you are enjoying are not the kind of risk I'm willing to take with my points for the sake of a renter and I don't know too many owners who would, either. Payments are usually due in full within days of the reservation confirmation, no wait lists - ever, and definitely no cancellations or refunds. However a lot of owners are willing to attempt to reschedule the trip as long as it uses the same number of points, a villa is available and the points originally used do not expire before the new reservation. You have found a very rare owners if you are getting those terms.

Already deleted my post about it, as apparently it is not the norm and completely understand the reasoning for the rebuttal. I’m sure everyone on here is a great owner and their terms respected.
