Renting DVC Points - Novice Question

I tried to post on the DVC rent thread but I didn't follow the specific guidelines for posting so hopefully someone has a quick answer here.

A kind fellow dis member recommended possible renting points and it didn't occur to me to do this because I thought it would be extremely pricey.

Could someone tell me if this is the correct way to approach this. Say for instance I want to stay at Saratoga Springs which requires approx. 125 points and the DVC member is renting at $10 per point, is that $1250 for the week or am I missing something?

Also, has anyone had success renting points from people they do not know and how is this accomplished? Do I make the reservation? Does the DVC owner make the reservation? How am I guaranteed that the reservation has been made?

Pardon my :confused3 , this is a new concept to me. :)

Hidy Ho! Search "rent points" on the DVC board and it'll bring all sorts of stuff, but this is the real beauty.

Yes, if you put in the point calculator and it is showing 125 points for the entire week it'll be $1250 if renting at $10 a point. You'll post on the DVC Rent/Trade Board "Reservation Wanted" and how many points - if you are particular about the resort then post that too. In your post put specific information including dates and how to contact you. Some renters don't have the ability to PM so they may need you to post an e-mail address they can use.

I'd say they've had tons of successful transactions on the DIS. Only 2 reports for the very first time - which was unusual. It may have been a renter not paying as well. I don't know the specifics. I'm doing it for the first time and the renter has made me very comfortable about the transaction. :thumbsup2

This is probably going to be moved to the DVC board so hang on tight. You'll want to post your "How to rent points" questions on the first DVC forum and not planning or rent/trade board. Ok.

$1250 would be correct at the $10 PP price. Renting points is done every day on the dis with few to no real bad stories. Follow the guidelines for posting and also PM people that are offering points. Tell them what week, resort, and size accomodaions. The owner will have to call member services and check availability and also book the reservation in need be. Guarentee is a tough word to use here...more like trust. As a retner you have to understand that the owner has complete control over that reservation....from booking your DME and DDP to room resquests. The only proof you would have is a copy of the ressie conformation with a #. A few days before departure you can call the resort direct to make sure the ressie exists. I hope this isn't scaring you...it works well for both parties involved. Just have faith and trust. Research the potential renters posts...more the better. Any other specific questions let me know I have rented my point sout before....

I've had success renting points. I prefer to respond to a person renting points rather than post "reservation wanted". DVC members can book at their home resort 11 months out and at other DVC resorts 7 months out. Good luck!

Watch out renting you can get hooked. I did and now own.

Make sure you understand the member's cancellation policy. They might not allow any changes or cancellations. So if you cancel, you might lose everything you have already paid. The points that the member owns has a limited time frame. Some might expire before others.

You will not be able to call Member Services to confirm your reservation. The best you can do it get a copy of the reservation from the member and call the resort directly about three or four days before you check in.

Not all members rent their points at $10 a point. Many rent for more. And if you have any special needs (like they need to call day by day for the reservation), they may charge you more. Just get all the details before you make a deal.

Good luck.

I rented from a very nice lady May '05. Knowing she had complete control of the reservation and that she could cancel at any time made me a little nervous. Personally I would never rent from someone who didn't have quite a few posts here on the DIS and even then I'd read some of their old posts just to feel comfortable. The lady I rented from had ALOT of posts, had rented before, and just reading her old posts made me feel comfortable that she was a true Disney lover and could be trusted. Again, it involves trust on both sides, because if you cancel the owner can also be stuck losing those points sometimes. I would definitely do it again! I was able to get a BW studio for cheaper than I could have stayed at a moderate. By the way, weekend points (Fri-Sat) are much more expensive so you might want to consider a split stay. I used an AP discount at POP for two nights before switching over to BW for Sun night.

Kribit - I know you were debating Pop or WL. Renting points Sun-Thur can make your stay a good value and you can probably be okay with the extra points paid on a Friday night. Crash at Pop for the night on Sat (your arrival day I presume). Take your bags to bell services at Pop Sun morning to have them move to the DVC resort. Stay DVC and enjoy deluxe-like amenities (you can search for the villas @ WL if that resort appeals to you). It's good bang for your buck. You can pay $25 a day for housekeeping if you wish and can save money on some of your meals. You can purchase groceries through gardengrocer.com or wegoshop.com which is far better than what Member Services offer IMO. To REALLY see the difference price out your room at the DVC property through the Disney website, then price out Pop, then calculate how many points you need on the point calculator and estimate at least $11 for a high season - worst case $12 a point. Check out the Rent/Trade board to see what points are available and the price for your the time of year you plan to be in Disney. It's a little grunt work, but it may pay off BIG in the end. This does take trust on both sides. I'd have to say it's a safe environment here. I didn't mean to scare you with the 2 little reports they had up on Mousesavers. 2 reports...out of how many transactions on this board? TONS! Not enough to scare me away at all. It was probably a fluke thing. If you book ME through the owner that's another way to verify your reservation BTW. I am looking forward to my first ME experience also.

Can't wait for my 1st BWV stay (rented points myself ;) ). I hope I do catch the DVC bug. :)

I would have never known about renting points unless I read here. Oddly enough dh and I were chatting with one of my sons friends grandfather and he owns DVC at the BW and wants to rent out his points!! Then we were quickly dissapointed that it wasn't at the time we need, however, I didn't realize so many people owned these.

DH had the opportunity to buy some 10 years ago and they were begging for buyers at that time and offering great deals. I could be wrong but I think the price was around $6500....boy we sure kick ourselves for not taking that offer!!!
