Hello Everyone! :cool2:

I think it will be best for my budget and preference to rent DVC points. How do I do this? Where do I find a person? Who makes the reservation? Can I do this for other people in my bridal party? Any synopsis on how the process works would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :thumbsup2

Sincerely,

I don't have a clue :lmao:

I would start over at the DVC rent/trade board:

http://www.disboards.com/forumdisplay.php?f=29

Read a couple of the stickies at the top of the forum there, they might give you more information about the process.

You can definitely find potential renters there. They make the reservation for you. If you want to do this for mulitple people, you might have to find multiple renters because it will depend on how many points they have to rent and how many points you will need for everyone.

Hope that helps a little.

I've done this successfully for two trips. I liked it so much the first time I've rented 3 rooms for my wedding so far, through 2 different people! It's really nice to have the kitchen and more space.

I've stayed at Old Key West and Saratoga Springs so far and loved them both. You still get Magical Express and can get the Dining Plan added, but the person you are renting for makes all of the arrangements.

When is your trip? I can rent you mine depending on when you want to go. You can PM me if interested.

Basically, it is in your best interest to find someone who owns at the resort you want to stay at. DVC members who own at a resort have the advantage of an 11 month booking window, otherwise, they have to wait until 7 months before your trip, and availability at that resort may be very limited at that point. Going rate for renting points is about 11 to 13 dollars per point.

I'm sending you a PM with additional info.

Oh I wanted to find out about this too but I really had no idea where to start  Roughly how much is it per night to rent DVC points?

For those of you who have rented point sucessfully, do you have any tips on renting? How do you know it's safe? Were you ever worried that the renters would take your money and run? I am really interested in renting for my upcoming trip in Jan or Feb of this year. However, it just scares me because it seems like don't control your own reservation. :confused3

This may or may not be necessary depending on where/when you want to stay. The more popular and newer DVC resorts go fast (AKL, BCV, BLT). If you don't care where you stay OKW and SSR can be booked almost any time and by any one except for peak times (Christmas).

I've never paid more than $9.5 a point and I wouldn't suggest anyone else pay more than that either! The owners whose home resorts are the more popular ones may be able to get more for their points since they have that nice long window.

You pay per point. The cheapest DVC options for studios are roughly 8 points per night S-Thu and 12 points Fri and Sat, so at $10 per point it's $80 or $120. The more week nights you stay, the more affordable it becomes because your rate per night averages out lower.

That's why it's best to start at the Rent/Trade DVC board here, most renters are established DIS members and you can trust them! One of my reservations has been done completely by Paypal and email (one phone call). The other happened to be relatively local and he came to my house and picked up my check!

I've done it twice and will be renting again in December. I found a person through the DIS Rent/Trade Board with whom I've worked all three times, and it has been a great experience. I pay through PayPal and have never had a problem.

One thing you might look for is a DIS member who has a fairly decent number of posts because it indicates that s/he is an active member of the community. There are a lot of people on the rent/trade board who only have, like, 10 posts and they're all posts offering points for rent. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but I felt more comfortable working with someone whom I could get a feel for by reading their past posts.

The majority of people I have spoke to are offering to rent me points at $10 a point. However, I found someone that is offering to do it for $8. I would obviously love to rent from the individual that is offering the $8, but I am worried that it might be a scam. Should I stick with someone that is offering the $10 a point? Is this normally the normal rate? Does anyone have anyone they recommend me trying to get in contact with on the Dis that rents points? Thanks!

~Lauren

It might not be a scam - it could be that their points are about to expire and they need to unload them, or that you are asking to rent a TON of points and they are cutting you a deal.

Click on their username and go down to the option that lets you view all their posts. Maybe by reading through their posting history you can see if they are a pro point renter or a regular person. :thumbsup2

I would check them out, but Carrie is right. If your dates are right before the cut off then you can usually get a pretty good deal.

We rented points and loved it. Also the best part of DVC is that your room reservation count toward your room block for those people planning DFTWs.

Check out the rent trade board...and then you will learn about all the necessary steps of the dvc renting process...its rather unique...you may find more ppl with experience in that neighborhood on those boards...and more likely to get exactly what you are looking for...and you may have to pay more than 9.50 a point especially during premium times...I know that for a fact...

Thanks everyone for the advice! I am torn between renting from two individuals. One is offering to rent me hers for $8 a point, which makes me skeptical. She also is knew to the disboards and this is her first time renting points, which also makes me nervous. She has spent so much time speaking with me through e-mail and helping me out with where to stay. I have expressed my reservations with renting from someone I don't know and she has been very patient and kind. She has offered different payment options with me and even offered to set up a paypal account. She said said I could pay 50% now and the other 50% 2 weeks prior to the vacation and if I need to cancel I will get a full refund. She is going to draw up a contract for both of us to sign and offered to send me a copy of her driver's license so I can verify her name and address. She even gave me her DVC member login and password for me to look around in an attempt to ease my uneasiness. Her points are going to expire in February and she can't use them. I just don't know because she is selling her points for such a low price.

The other individual owns at 3 resorts and has rented multiple times. She has references. I also just found out she lives about 10 minutes from my home. She is very knowledgeable about DVC and the renting process. She is offering to rent me points for $9.50 each.

If your opinion, what would you do if you were in my situation? Who would you rent from? Thank you for reading this and offering you input!

~Lauren

An extra $1.50 per point for piece of mind doesn't seem like that much extra to me.

I work in residential rentals, and one thing that I've always found is that following your gut instinct really pays off.

I agree, go with your instinct, that way you'll not worry about it right up until you get there!

I think I'm gonna do this for our honeymoon too, we are going in October but won't be able to book for another month, do you guys think that there will still be availability?

DF and I rented points for our trip last year and are probably going to rent points again for our disneymoon. We also used a fellow DISer and everything worked out great. One thing you can always ask for is a reference. :thumbsup2 That was something that really made me feel more at ease.

Yes! But the person you are renting from will have to make the arrangements. This applies to the Dining Plan as well! :thumbsup2
