Renting an already booked reservation

I'm sorry if this has already been asked, but I'm in a panicky mode and can't quite find the answer I'm looking for. I've never rented DVC before. This isn't renting points, but an already confirmed reservation that I saw advertised on one of the rental sites. I just got an e-mail from the rental site to pay part of the reservation today so it can be transferred to me. Before I send the payment I just had a couple of questions -

1 - Once the reservation is transferred into my name, would the reservation solely belong to me or would the DVC owner still be involved in any way?

2 - Would I be able to add a dining plan to the reservation?

3 - When I check in, how does it work since I'm not the DVC owner?

TIA!! :)

1. The DVC owner always owns the reservation.
2. The owner has to add the dining plan
3. No different than checking into any other reservation.

The owner always retains control until you check in. Thus, there is a factor of trust when renting from a DVC owner. You need to have the owner order the dining plan (which has to be paid for when ordered) to be able to get it with a DVC reservation and that needs to be ordered at least two days before arrival.

Though the owner has ultimate control, the owner will provide to you the reservation number in your name when you make the reservation and you use that number for setting up the trip in your MDE account and you essentially have control over what you associate with that trip through your MDE asccount -- dining reservations, park tickets, FP+. Important when making the reservation is that you identify those who will be on the trip with you and thus in your MDE account so that the names you have in the MDE account match exactly the ones the owner puts on the reservation. If you do early check-in through your MDE account and set up everything necessary in that acocunt for the trip, including ordering and getting magic bands and providing a communication link in the check-in information for when you arrive (most choose text message), you will be informed of room number and when it is ready on your arrival date and you can just go directly to the room.

Make sure it's a direct reservation and not a RCI exchange.

All of the above is good advice. Just wanted to let you know that we have rented confirmed reservations from other members many times and all have gone off without a hitch.

You never stop wondering, "what if" before you check in but that is just what happens when other people control your reservation.

Make sure it's a direct reservation and not a RCI exchange.

As for the RCI exchange, isn't there usually a fee at check-in? Something like $95? That would be a tip -off.

True but it sometimes isn't listed or the OP might have not realized or simply omitted the information. Regardless, when I respond to posts I'm often thinking about who will read it not just the specific poster of the thread or response in question.

Thanks everyone for responding. I pulled the trigger and decided to do the rental. I already have the confirmation # for the reservation with our names on it as guests, so I'm guessing it's all okay. I did the rental through one of the reputable rental sites, so I was hoping that meant it was fine.

What is a RCI exchange though?

What is a RCI exchange though?

An RCI exchange is someone who got a DVC reservation through a trade with RCI. Those types of reservations are not allowed to be transferred to others. I would assume that any reputable company would not allow those types of reservations.

They actually can be transferred including a reimbursement for the exchange and guest certificate fee but nothing above that. Obviously in this context we're talking a significantly higher fee though usually far less than a direct rental would be.

Okay..sorry for the misinformation...but isn't there some rule about RCI reservations that is a no-no??? Maybe I am confusing it with that???

Renting/Selling/Bartering/Trading of exchanged weeks is against RCI Terms and Conditions (II also), however with RCI you can "give" or "gift" an exchanged week to family or friends and request the exchange and guest certificate fees only. You cannot recoup your maintenance fees OR make any profit by giving or gifting an exchanged week.

It's actually more complicated than my first note, I was trying to be accurate without too technical. Here's the specifics as I understand it. For II AND RCI, their rules as written simply preclude renting. They have a semi official but oft quoted (including by their upper management on a BBS) that it's OK to recoup any direct costs paid to RCI such as the exchange and guest certificate fee. Obviously this isn't going to be applicable for such a situation in play here. It's also important to note it's RCI's rule and enforcement, not DVC's, a fact that is often missed.

Thanks! That helps to further my understanding!!!

In rereading my note I see I was not clear to say this was only applicable to RCI, II does not give the same latitude on allowing any reimbursement.
