Renting a Surrey bike at the Boardwalk

Think I might rent a Surry bike with my wife and pop my 18 month old in the front basket. Is there anywhere on the bike that could hold her stroller, or indeed at the rental location?

Also, If you have one rented, can you stop off along the boardwalk - i.e. for an ice cream or must you stay with it at all times?

Thanks, Stevey

You could leave the stroller at the rental place. There is nowhere on the bike for it
The rental is 1/2 hour , which is usually 2 laps around the lake.
I would just walk to the candy store after for ice cream which is basically right there.

I rented a surreybike at VWL last year and my 7 year old rode in the front basket next to my then 15 month old. They allowed it. My son was belted in and my 7 year old kept her arm around him and I sat right behind him. I don't see anything wrong with it and I'm a very safety oriented person.

I cannot believe that! well- I do-but....
We were not even allowed to have our child in the front seat because he didn't reach the measuring line. They insisted he be in the rear, and after seeing the speed we got going down the hill I understood why!

I can't recall if they measured our son or not, however, he has always been very large for his age and was wearing a size 3T when he was 15 months. Actually, I seem to remember my older two being measured and only my 11 year old was allowed to sit at a peddled eat in the main bike. Pretty sure they told us to have the other two in the front.

Maybe there are different bikes? My nine year old could not sit in the front and pedal- too short. He had to ride in the back~

We rented one at the NJ shore for 7 of us, and put our twin toddlers in the front belted kiddie seats.

We rented a surrey bike at Boardwalk one year and hated every minute of it. There are two hills going around the lake area, and you have to be sprinting, I mean really sprinting, to make it up those bad boys. It wasn't uncommon to see people have to hop out and push their bike up. Now, while you are trying to gain speed to make it up the darn hills, you also have to manage to not hit any people. We found it extremely stressful and hard work. It wasn't a leisurely relaxing pedal at all, it was like a vigorous workout. They also charge by the twenty minutes, so there's no time to stop.

I would definitely skip the surrey bike. Never again will I rent one in that boardwalk area. Please note this is coming from a very fit set of people.

If the BW is difficult/dangerous (ive never done a surrey there). Then I suggest you going over to WL if you want to ride one. We rode there and the whole way was flat. We took the trail that went all the way over to the stable at Fort wilderness. We saw at least 4 deer on the way and then parked our bike to look at the horses etc and rode back. GREAT RIDE!!!

Perfect! Thanks for this- sounds great for 2 teen boys.

Actually- just checked- says bike rentals are closed now during refurbishment but anyway would only be for resort guests :(

Thanks! I didn't know they had them over there and that sounds like a much nicer ride than the boardwalk.

We rented them at POR before and had a great time. There were some hills but I don't remember them being too bad. You could try their also.

Our family thought it was hilarious when we couldn't get up that Boardwalk hill. We were so tickled we couldn't pedal and had to get out and push. Our girls were embarrassed at how hard we were laughing!

It was fun! But a little frightening with the speed on the way down. I cannot imagine a baby in the front basket- we thought we were either going to tip over or run someone over.

I agree with this. The kids don't really pedal enough to help get the extra weight up the hills. However the stressful part was avoiding the people walking! It's usually crowded. We would be ringing the bell and most people didn't turn to see us until we were right up on them. In addition they usually walk side by side in a large group so it's not easy just to drive around them. Maybe the daytime is better than nighttime for less crowds on the boardwalk.

Anyone ever try these at Caribbean Beach? We were thinking of renting one of these for a family of 4 to embarrass (what will be by then) our teenage daughter and whip the 5-year-old into shape (PUT YOUR LEGS INTO IT, GARRUS)! However if the hills are bad like what I'm hearing about Boardwalk, my teenager might not be the only one emarassed, lol!
