Renting a scooter with a walker rack

I've never seen a walker carrier for a rollator. I have seen them for regular walkers though. I'm not sure you could find one, even if you bought it yourself online for a rollator.

My question is why do you need a walker if you are using an ECV. An ECV can be taken into any attraction line and used all the way up to the ride vehicle. You can remain seated in it for any show. And most places to eat you do not have to get out of the ECV and can transfer (if you desire) to a seat.

as "rollator walker holder for scooter" and I don't think these holders are meant for rollator style walkers. Infact, some of the ads speciffically said it does not work for rollators.

You can ask around at the different rental places and see what their responses may be to your specific situation.

I think your best best will be bungee cords (I would say three or four) large enough to secure around the back seat of the scooter. Keep in mind, this will be rubbing on the back of the user somewhat. You might be able to get some kind of strapping that would work and be easier on the rubbing. You will have to make this very tight to work and secure the walker from falling. It may even require two people to secure it well.

From what I saw on the search you are better off putting the walker upside down when placing it on the scooter back seat. In other words legs up.

Have you thought about using two canes instead? I think that would be easier and better to secure to a scooter. Also, you can rent a regular walker and then use the scooter holder that's designed for those kinds of walkers on the scooter. I think this would be your best bet.

I agree with the other posters that unless you want to walk some using the scooter all around the parks is pretty good. You can go through ride queues and so forth. For restaurants you probably have to walk on your own accord.

You can get your exercise around the resort by using your walker there if this is your intention.

Thanks for your replies.

The scooter is for my mom. She has a variety of issues including: hammertoes, "busted" feet & toes (was a nurse for ~20 years and has worn all the fat pads off her feet :scared1:), past knee surgery, balance issues, stamina/fatigue issues, (cancer survivor), leg cramps and fibromyalsia, among other things. She can't walk for long distances, but can't sit all day either. She likes to remain active as much as possible. The rollator walker seems to work the best for her. It takes away the pain of walking. She can make a couple of hours at our zoo with it. Of course, DW is quite a bit different than a few hours at the zoo. ;)

I did some searches for a rollator carrier as well and, yes, I don't think one exists. It doesn't fold up flat at all, so it makes sense. The bungy cords are an interesting idea. When I rent a scooter I'll ask the agent what they think of that. Otherwise, a cane (one of the ones with 4 legs) is her second choice. I can see us now going through the airport with her walker and a cane or two plus all our other stuff...

Something you might ask about that might work in combination with the bungees is if the rental company uses a walker carrier that fits into the back of the scooter. It would have to be a metal one. I believe that those type have a hook of sorts might work for you if you bungee the rollator to it besides.

would be to use a gait belt and help your mom when she decides to walk. Obviously, you'll have to park the scooter when you do this with her. I wouldn't go too far, but this may be useful for restrooms, restaurants and some rides. I use a gait belt for my mom and it's a good tool when she's not in her wheelchair to get her around with my help.

I think there's enough to do off the scooter (like restroom and so forth) when you're in the park to be satisfied that you are not sitting all day. The resort will be another way to move around in the morning and the evening without a scooter.

If you will be in the parks for 8 hours or more, I think she may get more tired anyway and she may like being on the scooter more.

I do very controlled exercises with my mom each morning in the room to get her loosened up before our day starts in the parks. Sometimes, I do them again when we return to our room at night.

By the way good, long bungee cords are a little expensive to buy. Also, I think a rental scooter company might not give this idea friendly reviews; because, they want their scooters used carefully and gently. You may want to ask about doing this at a local scooter store and maybe they will let you practice doing this as a way to buy the scooter even if you don't buy the scooter. Worse to worse, I would try it at the grocery store scooters. Go somewhere a little hidden and see how this would work for you.

I just rented a scooter from Walker for my dad, who is visiting next week, and they offer a crutch/walked holder. I have no idea what it looks like or how it works, but I will after next week! My dad needs his crutches to stand, and since he may want to stand once in a while, or transfer from the scooter to a wheelchair for some rides, he always keeps his crutches with him. Usually he holds his crutches on his lap, but since they offered the holder, I got it and we'll see how it works.

Let us know how it goes. Have a great trip!

Here's a quick update in case anyone is interested in this information. Apple Scooters told me they have a holder for the rollator. I'm trying to see if they have a photo of it. I bet it will look something like this: http://www.gmobility.com.au/SCORH.htm

We're leaving in about a month. I'll post some info about it after we get back.

I forgot to take pictures, but the walker/crutch rack on the Walker scooter was useless for my dad's forearm crutches.

In order for a rack to work for forearm crutches you have to specify it. They make 2 different styles of rack for crutches. One holds the underarm style and one holds the forearm crutches. I have for my personal scooter the rack that holds forearm crutches. It works great for them, but would not work well for the other style.

Absolutely. My best guess is that the padded bar (backrest when your sitting) goes in the straps on the top part. I'm bringing some bungies because I'm having a hard time visualizing how it stays collapsed in the holder. I think when we use the buses I may just have my mom use the walker to get on, and I'll drive the scooter in. We'll be there Jan. 20-26.

I use an ECV. I have a walker carrier.

I would be hesitant to hang a rollator from my ECV because:

1 - The weight of the rollator is not evenly distributed when folded. This might cause the ECV to tip.

2 - The ECV will go slower, and not as far on a battery charge - due to the increased weight of the rollator.

3 - The bulkiness of the rollator could cause her to misjudge, and back into someone. The standard walker already is a lot of bulk.

4 - The "flat" part of the curbs isn't really flat, and at MK the trolley tracks are horrible to deal with. The walker has already fallen off my ECV. Imagine the rollator falling off!!

Advice - If she really wants to use the rollator as well as the ECV, have someone else take it to the parks for her. She could trade one for the other at her desired times.

I can see how that would be the case. I pushed mom's wheelchair last time we went. Those tracks at MK are awful. AK was rough, too. Thanks for the heads up. We'll get a chance to try it out at our resort the first night and make a judgement call. It's only a one time $20 fee....

The Go Go Elite we rented from Apple for my mom worked perfectly. It had a delta tiller, was a 3 wheel and maneuvered well and worked all day long on one charge.

Our flight in was delayed due to weather, so we got there over an hour later than we expected. The scooter waiting for us did not have a rack attached. So we just brought it in the room and I figured I would call in the next morning. As I was looking at the scooter next to the walker, a thought that maybe sticking a walker (rollator) on the back of it may not be a great idea. It looked wider than the scooter by a little bit. The walker is fairly heavy as well and didn't seem like a good thing to hang off the back of the small scooter.

When I called the next morning, I discussed these with Apple over the phone. (I think Jose). They said that they recommend that a walker isn't wider than the scooter, something about weight, etc. I suspect they knew that the walker wouldn't work in the first place. ;) But that's OK, so they said they'd refund the walker rack charge. Which I need to call back on because they haven't. Hopefully they will when I call. Either way I got a scooter for 8 days (actually 9, but they must consider a day a 24 hour period) for $162. Less when they (hopefully) refund the rack. They gave me a 10% discount for mentioning the dis boards.
