Renting a scooter questions

I am seriously thinking about renting a scooter from Walker for our trip in October. I, too, am one of those people who does not look disabled. However, I don't have much cartilege left in my knees and now have some serious problems in my lower back. I can walk, but not for long periods of time. My husband(73) wants to push me(65) in a wheelchair the whole trip. I do not think this is fair to him, so that's why I am considering the scooter.

Couple of questions:

We are staying at Fort Wilderness. Will they deliver the scooter there for us.

We won't have any vehicle other than our small motor home and will use Disney transportation, ie. boat, busses, etc. Will we be able to get the scooter on them?

Is it safe to leave it while you are dining or on a theme park ride?

Are there any additional charges other than the $30.00 per day?

This is such a wonderful forum. It is so compasionate and no question ever is treated as foolish. I look forward to any help, suggestions or answers.

I do believe they will deliver the scooter to the check in building at Fort Wilderness.
I have use an ECV from Walkers on all modes of transportation. The only problem is if the water level is too low/high then some of the small boats have a problem. The busses have either ramps or lifts. The monorail has ramps and special cars for w/c/ECVs.
Take the key with you when you leave the ECV. If the CM must move it then there is a free wheeling feature that allows them to roll it. Don't leave anything of importance in the ECV.
I have never had an extra charge above the daily rate.
I think you are very smart to get the ECV. It will give you freedom and independencew and your DH won't be worn out from pushing.
I do have a question about where you plan to leave the ECV at night . Will it fit into you Mobile home? Or will you need to leave it somewhere to charge it? I'm not familar with FW. Maybe you can leave it at the Trading Post?

Hi, I may be able to help.

My husband will be undergoing chemo while we are there and I called and got him a scooter. I called 407-518-6000 and they will deliver it to your hotel and come pick it up when you are done. For the week we are there, I think it is going to be about $150.00. But I am not sure how many days that is for, 5 or 6. I can't remember.

I hope this helps and I hope you are feeling well during your trip.

I have a suggestion for that. I take hubby's ECV with me to Ft. Wilderness for my December camping trips to use as my Ft. Wilderness internal transportation. Get a small gas grill cover and bring it with you. It fits perfectly over the ECV and I park it outside my tent and charge it up each night with the power at the site. During the day (while I'm at the parks) it sits in the golf cart parking either at Trails End or at the Outpost with the cover over it and it stays perfectly dry.

As a matter of fact, our small motor home would not be able to accomodate the scooter. It would have to be outside. Do they plug into a regular electrical receptacle? Out motor home has an outside plug that we use to hook up different things. :confused3

I also have a question about the scooters. This will be our first time visiting universal orlando. We will need an electric scooter for our 22 yr old son who is under going treatment for bone cancer. He uses crutches to get around short distances but will definatley need the scooter for the park. I understand we can rent it right in the parking area? Also, what are we going to do with the crutches? Hmmm Maybe we can attach them to the back of the seat with a bungee cord. Help......

Each campsite has an electrical post with several electrical connections of various types. There are at least two standard household outlets that your scooter will plug into. Depending on your motor home electrical needs, there will still be a standard outlet available, plus the more heavy duty outlet that some RVs require.

Don't forget to bring something that will keep the scooter out of the rain and early morning mist. I'm sure the wetness in the electical systems isn't good for the scooter.

I agree with the others. Please get the scooter, you'll enjoy your vacation much more with it.

Universal Studio only rents out ECVs in the parks. There is an area where both garages come together and before you go on the slides to CityWalk where you can rent wheelchairs. Once you get the wheelchair to the park you can then rent an ECV and they will give you credit for the amount paid for the wheelchair rental. When you are leaving you can turn in the ECV and they will loan you a wheelchair to get as far as the wheelchair rental area in the garages.

If you have a handicap hang tag for him I would suggest that you bring it with you. Disabled Parking is right next to the preferred parking area and does not require any elevators or escalators. If you do not, arrange to get him one vefore your trip, even a temporary one.

If you rent one from off-site it will be available at all times and better than the ones rented in the parks. Also you can let them know about the crutches and they will provide crutch holders on the ECV. The renatlas are designed to be easily broken down and stored in a car trunk (generally you will need a full-size four door sedan). For more information about off-site rentals if you click on where it says "disABILTIES" at the top of this page it will take you to the Index. The third item down is the "disABILTIES FAQ" which will gives lots of useful information, including where people rent ECVs.

We went to Universal and when we went to get a scooter they were gone (it was still early)
I ended up with a bad wheelchair, brought it back for another and it wasn't much better.
We now bring my own scooter along on our trips.
We rented a scooter from www.scootarama.com for my Dad, They were great, Less costly than some others and delivered and picked up too.

This will be my first trip to disney with my daughter and sister. I can also walk only very short distances. When reading about the scooters Disney offers, It sounds too difficult! I read on the Disney guest services website that there are a limited number of ECVs at each park, when you arrive, you rent one for the day, first come first served. And only manual wheelchairs are available where we are staying at the Caribbean Beach Resort...Disney recommends renting from a nearby medical supply store for the length of your stay. Which I did! It is discount medical supply mobilityequipmentrentals I get the scooter delivered before I arrive at the hotel, and picked up right before I leave. This includes all taxes, fees and delivery! I'm staying for 8 days. I think that's a great deal. And then I have it all the time , no worrying about if I'll get one at the park etc... Good luck!

I don't know if anyone suggested you look in the disABILITIES FAQs thread, but there is quite a bit of helpful info, there, including links to a variety of off-site rental places.

I agree with the others about renting from off-site (plus you could get a crutch holder).

According to Universal's Guest Service page, you can call and reserve an ECV in advance at their parks (different than WDW, where it is first come, first serve). That might be a good option for someone who is only needing one at that park or is concerned about transporting the ECV to the park.
Also, Universal has a very complete Rider's Guide which might be helpful to your son in deciding which attractions to go on.
