Renting a lens for dark ride photography

cameralensrentals.com rents Sigma. Reasonable prices and super easy to deal with. If you sign up for their emails/register on their site you will get a small discount on your first rental.

I think it might just be the way I process photos (personal preference). By all accounts, the Sigma is really quite sharp at 1.4 (much sharper wide open than the 1.8) for the best of both worlds.

Perhaps I simply have a bad copy but my Sigma 30mm f/1.4 is laughably soft wide open compared to a 50mm f/1.8 wide open. There really is no comparison. My nifty fifty is super sharp at f/1.8 and my Sigma is a disappointment, so much so that I cringe every time I look at ANY Sigma lens. I'd never buy an older Sigma lens ever again. I think the newer lenses like the Art line are probably safe bets. But anything made before then is a total no-go for me.

So it is sounding like going from 1.8 to 1.4 will not really matter. The 50 was still too close and I do want to go to a 30mm or 35mm if possible. Here are a few of my sad attempts form the last trip. Hopefully I can improve this time around..I got nothing on Peter Pan...ugh and my POtC had a very red color to them.

I totally understand wanting wider than the 50mm. Just don't be disillusioned that the 30 or 35 will get you better images. They'll change the framing so you'll get a wider shot but they won't improve the image. That's up to you.

You might also consider learning more about post processing. Shoot RAW so you can easily correct things like a red cast. You'll also be able to balance the exposure in an image that has a wide dynamic range much easier if you shoot RAW.

Has anyone tried the Canon 28mm 2.8 IS lens yet?

Canon states that it will "It does however detect panning shots automatically and switches over to an IS mode that compansate either just horizontal or vertical shake."

"image stabilizer that compensates camera shake to allow shutter speeds up to 4 f-stops slower."

Sounds like it could be an interesting combination with a full frame body.
But I wonder how well it works in real life?

Image stabilization on a 28mm lens isn't going to be a factor in a Disney Dark Ride. Since you're in actual motion, it's not like you can get away with a 1/10 shutter speed. Even with "panning correction."
