Renting a golf cart

All of the reading I've done over the past couple of days has convinced me to rent a cart, even though we love to walk, just for the fun of it.

Newbie Question: how, exactly, DO you rent one????

To rent one from Fort Wilderness, I think you still call the Fort Wilderness Bike Barn...or try 407-WDW-PLAY. I think they still reserve through the bike barn even though they are picked up at the Outpost. I can't find the Bike Barn # but the WDW PLAY number should be able to route you to the right place.

I'm not sure about outside vendors but I understand they are much cheaper.

Outside vendors are only cheaper on rentals of about 10-14 days or longer. Less than that and you can't make up the delivery charges the outside vendors have.

Spent part of a day at the Fort during my last visit to WDW the first week on December....was surprised to find out they now only rent for "full" days. No hourly or 1/2 day rentals as in the past. We don't have an RV at this time, but like to explore at FW when we visit...checked out the Christmas decorations during our last visit.

Guess I'll just see if I can borrow from my little brother when I plan my next trip.

And, in the interests of saving a few bucks (always a good idea at Disney World), I am second guessing myself. I know it would be fun to have, but how necessary? Like I said before, we enjoy walking, are a "physically fit" family. Never stayed at Fort Wilderness before, but it looks like the boat over to MK is definitely the way to go, but maybe driving our own car everywhere else?

I am a big advocate of taking my own car everywhere but honestly, when we stayed at The Fort we didn't need to use it. We used the campground bus system to navigate around inside the Fort, rode the boat to MK-which by the way-you can take the monorail from MK to EPCOT, and used the park buses to get from the Fort to AK, MGM, and Downtown Disney.

I saw "military" in your signature-don't forget to take advantage of the military appreciation tickets this year-open for active duty and retirees and up to 5 companions. You can't really beat free tickets can you!?
Who knew the magic word to get dad to go was "free" ~grin~.

WOW! Make sure you pass along the info to everyone you know! From Jan 4th - Dec 23rd of this year, active duty/retirees and some reservists will be given a complimentary 5day park hopper pass with water parks and more. They are allowed up to 5 companion passes which are each a 5 day base ticket for $99 or you can add the park hopper and pay $124 for each ticket.

Service member does not have to be present. Also, you can purchase the vouchers at the MWR office at your local base and trade the vouchers at the gate. If you purchase that way, there will be no tax. If you purchase at the actual gate, you must pay tax.

We always use Disney Transportation to the parks and have never experienced some of the things I read about. then again, we very rarely go when its busy. If it is not the busy season, I suggest trying it, you might find it not worth driving your own vehicle.You also might find that your own car is the nly way to go..

Just a little history...Disney offered this deal once before a few years ago, following September 11. Our family was able to take advantage, and we stayed in a condo we booked through Armed Forces Vacation Club for $249. A week-long trip and tickets to Disney World for $650!!

Now, I have to go back and crunch numbers again. I just emailed DH the info (he's living in VA for a year). I have my heart set on staying at Fort Wilderness...hope I can still make it work and be financially responsible!!!!

Thanks for the info. We stayed on-site for the first time last Christmas, depended entirely on Disney transportation and it worked out great. We'll have our own car no matter what we decide as we're driving down, so if the bus system seems too crazy, we can always drive our own car. So I'm again wondering about the cart. We spent one Christmas on an island where no cars were allowed--kids loved the golf cart, which is why I'm seriously considering it. Decisions, decisions...

You are so welcome, I'm glad I could contribute something to the board someone could really use! If you can't get Fort Wilderness to work out, remember Turkey Lake is a nice campground with full hookups for only $18 a night. I hope you're able to go and enjoy

I am wondering, however, can we save the seven day tickets we purchased with the 4/3 package, or do we have to use them when we arrive in March? It would be nice if we could save them, go ahead and buy the military tickets and use them for this trip, then have the 4/3 package tickets to use next trip. Guarantee me another trip to the World!

The military tickets are available for purchase up to 12/23 so you could do the 4/3 deal now and buy the military tickets for a trip later in the year?

If we can't save our 4/3 tickets until next year, that's what we'll do. I certainly won't complain about two trips to Disney in one year--just unprecedented for us!!! We usually can manage only one visit once every other year...with DH in the military, and not even living with us right now, timing vacations at the same time can be challenging...But hey! It can happen! Sprinkling a little Disney magic...
