We're home now after our whirlwind long-weekend trip to Disney, and have had some time to decompress and share some thoughts on our experience.

We usually camp at the Fort, driving down from northern Michigan, but didn't have the luxury of that kind of time for our SW/GE experience. We'd been at the Fort a while back when we saw some boy scout-style tents being put up by some CM's, and asked about it. We were told that people can rent tents/cots for around $50/$55 per day, that Disney will both set the tents up and break them down so you don't have to do that work. I liked the way the tents we saw looked, so didn't have an issue calling Disney and setting up our tenting experience.

Our experience was somewhat less than magical. First off--major caveat here--the CM's were great. The tent was ready at our arrival, and put up excellently. I have not one negative thing to say about them :)

The downfall came in the condition the tent and cots were in. The tent smelled of mildew, was fairly dirty, and smallish. I know there were only two of us, but given my experience seeing the much larger (with more headroom) tent previously, what we got was something we (who are kind of on the short side) could barely stand upright in if we were standing in the middle.

But the cots needed to be thrown away. There were large stains on them, and were very dirty. We ended up getting large garbage bags from the store to put under our sheets. There was no way I was bringing those sheets home (no time really to wash them before leaving), so we trashed those. I"m not a overly picky person--I've camped out on the ground in Yellowstone, camped all around the country since 1968, and I can put up with a little dirt. But those cots were just gross.

We didn't ask to have our tent/cots changed as we weren't going to be there long enough to go through that hassle, but if someone is contemplating renting a tent from Disney, I'd suggest they ask in advance what kind of tent they're going to end up with.

Additionally, I'd like to share a note on the bathroom conditions in the facility closest to the bus stop in loop 2000. For the first time, since we first camped there in 2007, the bathrooms (I can only speak to the women's side, but my s/o said the mens was bad too) were not kept up well. There were broken/empty paper towel dispensers, the electric GFS outlet on the wall wasn't working (it wouldn't reset), and the outlet on the left hand side worked but my hairdryer plug kept falling out. There was mold in the mens side showers (as related to me by my s/o), paper on the floor from early evening to later morning (obviously the CM's who used to clean in the middle of the night are no longer doing so), and the bathroom floor was flooded by what I'm guessing was one of the toilets when we arrived--and it was in the same condition the next morning.

One of the main things I loved about the Fort in the past was the cleanliness of their bathrooms. This time, not so much.

On a different note--I don't know if it was just me or what, but the dinner at the Trails' End was even better than ever. The CM's there bent over backwards to getting us into the restaurant on our arrival evening, as we couldn't make reservations due to us being unsure what time we'd eventually get to the Fort. But they got us in, even though it was crowded, and averted us going into a full on hangry meltdown lol. Loved the experience, and we'll always have a soft spot for Trail's End.

We stay in 2000 a couple of times a year and I had noticed that the cast members that used to have a golf cart and were assigned to bathrooms during the day were no longer around. The bathrooms are definitely being cleaned less and since 2000 is so big plus no private rig bathrooms, the lack of upkeep is more obvious. I ran into a cleaning crew at 3am once.

BarbLynn, I noticed all the same issues when I was there in June. My cot was just plain Frightening and the bathroom needed cleaning badly. I find this to be very disturbing considering the cost for a campsite these days.

I never realized they had different sized tents. I suppose you didn't either. I'm sure this will be useful information for anyone renting in the future.

With my asthma, they would have had to change out the tent and cots for something without a mildew smell. That just couldn't do.

Mostly I'm interested in how you handled lack of a/c this past weekend. :sunny:

Also, last time we stayed in Loop 2000, the ladies showers closest to the bus stop had no hot water for the first 4 or 5 days. Wasn't pleasant.

We dealt with the heat by not being in the tent much until into the evening. We also bought one of those mister fans and rigged it so it blew down on himself while he was sleeping. I did ok until around 9 am, and then I had to get the heck outta dodge lol.

Yuck.

It would be cheaper to buy gear at Walmart and toss it or donate it after you’re done.
Since we flew down and didn't rent a car, it would have been a pain and a lot of time wasted waiting for delivery (if they even do that for tents), setting up, breaking down, etc. We weren't there long. Knowing what i know now, we'll never do that again; we'll either get a room or simply not visit Disney until we can travel down with our camper. As we're letting our annual passes expire, there probably won't be another trip like this in our future.

So, other than the tent and cots, did you have a fun time? Hoping you did.
Absolutely! We loved our experiences from Dok-Ondar's Den to something as simple as the boat rides. I enjoyed SW/GE more than I thought I would, the food was somehow better from Trails End to the Biergarten. We FINALLY got some Dole whip lol (not that we couldn't before, but it just didn't work out that way). One side note--we've heard of (and in the past, experienced) a down-turn in customer service from the CM's, whether due to lack of enough personnel, etc., but the CM's we met went over and above to be pleasant, helpful and informative (I'm looking at you, Walter from the Biergarten and hostesses from Trails End :thanks::cheer2:.

I was told that the bathroom cleaning was "privatized several years ago" after our stay in the 1700 loop 3 yrs ago the comfort station condition was a tipping point for us and we now only go every other year partially because of issues like this. Frankly the bathrooms in the FL state parks are cleaner than what we experienced that trip. We complained several times and even took pictures but the front desk did not seem concerned nor were they ever cleaned properly other than some bleach being poured into the drain trench to mask the smell from all the yuck.

I filled out one of the surveys, and while I'm not going to hold my breath on it, I hope that the comments I made about the BR's at least are noticed by a human 😟

The only way it will get any better is if people bring it to the mouses attention. Two trips to the front desk and some pictures wasnt enough to get anything done in a 2 week period so I am not holding my breath either. I cant imagine that cleaning bathrooms is a task that most cast members aspire to.

Hmmm, I wonder if they are also responsible for the lack of hot water in the showers when we were there? Talking to the front desk every single day only got us some fastpasses. The water never got fixed until the 5th day when I spoke with the woman who was cleaning the comfort stations. She radio'ed someone and we had hot water that evening when we got back from the parks.

The lack of hot water is common in that loop. It’s not always and it’s not directly related to how crowded the showers are. It’s very annoying.

I'm So sad to hear this. The overall cleanliness of Fort Wilderness was what I was most impressed with on our 1st Disney trip back in 2002. For years I've been telling people how wonderful it is to stay there. One of the reasons being, no matter the time, day or night the comfort stations are always spotlessly clean with plenty of hot water.
