Renting a car for 8 days vs. 1 week

I read a tip saying renting for 8 days, rather than using a 1 week rate + 1 hour rate, could result in a cheaper price. Has anyone done this? Is there any penalty charge for returning early?

I have no idea why this would be cheaper....

However, yes you can be penalized for returning early. If you don't keep the car for the time you agreed to then they can revert to a higher daily rate.

If you return it really early...a day or more, then I believe it will revert back to the weekly/hourly rate.
