Rentals - Cancelling Ressie - Who's Ressie ??

I was just reading over another posting here on cancelling ressies for points that were rented and it got me thinking.

My home resort is VWL, so I rent out my points and make a ressie for Xmas vacation week for a renter in the renters name. Come Oct the renter cancels their vacation and wants to cancel the ressie. My question is:
Do I have to cancel the ressie with MS or can I simply change the name on the ressie to someone else ?
I'm thinking that a ressie for Xmas week would be very valuable so I would have a much easier time remarketing it to someone else rather than trying to re-rent the points.

As the owner, you set the rules for cancelation. You might not refund the money until you were sure that you could rerent the reservation. Even after that, you might only refund a portion based on the effort required to rerent the reservation.

And if you have enough time to either rerent the reservation or use the points for a vacation for your family, do that. Yes, you could change the name on the reservation if you got another person to rent the reservation.

If you are going to rent I would do it with a no cancellation policy, these renters are getting to use our club for peanuts to start with and should not expect anything in return if they can not go.

Officially they are the members to do with as they want as far as DVC is concerned. They will not get involved in rental disputes. Ethically and legally it comes down the the contractual language (written or otherwise). I agree, I make any rentals non refundable.

All great points...but the answer to your question is...if you can find someone who wants the same dates, you simply change the name on the reservation. In your example, if you cancelled the ressie and tried to rebook different dates two months out, you would have virtually zero chance of being successful.

Good luck with that. A saavy renter will know that they can call MS themselves to book the DP (and the ME) so no need to pay the owner to do it for them.

But of course, you were just making a little joke, right?
