We are being gifted my aunt's couch. She's moved into a nursing home and can no longer use it. We need to bring it from her house in Rehoboth Beach, DE to ours in VA. So I'm trying to shop rentals for this. Preferably 1 way rentals from DE to VA.

Would prefer to avoid UHaul if possible.

I am looking for advice on rental size and places to rent from for as low as possible.

Also trying to shop rentals through BJs Club too. We do have an SUV but its definitely not big enough to hold the couch.

TIA

I would check Ryder, Budget, etc. You might be able to work with a tow-behind trailer instead of a truck.

Now a trailer was something we hadn't thought of. We do have the knob thingie that we can hitch the tow bar to. Wonder if that would come in cheaper.

Cause we gotta figure from her to our house is the rental fee+gas+added toll on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. Hmmmmm.....

Is it a gold plated couch or something, big sentimental value because it's antique?? For me, renting a vehicle & paying for gas round trip or paying to ship something as huge/heavy as a couch seems like a lot of wasted effort.

You'd probably be better off to sell it there, then take the money from that sale to buy another couch where you are.

Its a nice, fairly new couch, that wasn't much used because my aunt has been in a wheelchair for decades. So it was for visitor use really and its not really mine to sell. I used the "gifted" term because I couldn't think of a better one. My uncle(aunt's brother) holds power of attorney and is making everything in her trailer available for the family to claim before it goes up for sale.

I really do need a new couch, and as long i can keep the transporting cost to $100 or so then that saves me at least $250+ on a brand new couch that I really don't have the money for right now. Besides my parents live a few blocks away from her place anyhow, so its not like I'm making an extra trip just to go get the couch. We'll pick it up and spend the weekend with my family. Anything that does get sold from the house will go to pay the nursing home.

We would be going up soon anyhow, now we're just bringing a couch home with us. And before somebody suggests consignment stores/thrift shops etc. We have been looking in those places for a good while now and have yet to find anything we can agree on, when we can find anything at all.

Well, as it turns out, I am wrong about having a hitch on our our SUV. we actually don't have 1. This leaves out towing the couch on a trailer. Bother

Towing a trailer is the easiest thing in the world. Way cheaper than any truck rental. Not only do you pay gas and rental fee, you have to pay a per mileage fee.

For a longer move like that, I would look at Budget, and don't forget to check the post office "change of address form" there's usually a coupon in there for them. Although I'm sure a ton can be found at retailmenot.com

I've actually done several Uhaul rentals, trucks and trailers, and I can't say that I've had any bad experiences with them. The last truck we rented, was relatively new with like 50,000 miles on it.

Since you want to spend the weekend there, I'd go with a one way rental. The per day charge will bite you in the butt. And it usually comes out a slight bit cheaper than doing a round trip after you calculate the mileage.

I would also look at renting a utility van, it might have a back end long enough. But I'd get measurements first before you try.

I CANNOT TOW WITHOUT A HITCH!!

There is NO HITCH on my vehicle. Everybody will rent me the tow bar but without an actual hitch the tow bar is USELESS!

So I am now back to my original dilemna whether I like it or not. And since Daytona is who knows how long delayed this is how I am spending my day.

And unless you know something i don't, I really don't think a couch needs a change of address form. I have yet to receive any mail addressed to "Ocotberbride03's couch"

The poster meant that when someone changes their address, the post office sends coupons which include vehicle rental coupons. Often such coupons are discarded at the post office and you can find them there.

I'm sorry you're so frustrated about your free couch not being free. You could check with moving companies in Rehoboth Beach to see if any are bringing a load to your location in Virginia. Perhaps they might bring your couch for less than the cost of a rental truck. Perhaps there might be a college student with a truch returning home to VA from college in DE who would bring your couch for you. There are ways of getting it home that are less expensive than others.

Wow... Comments like that don't really encourage more people to offer suggestions...

I had an idea, but I'm too afraid of getting chewed out, so nevermind!

Actually, its not the couch. Its NASCAR withdrawal, which will last me another month due to the weather in Fl and my work schedule. And if she'd have read the entire first post she should have figured out I didn't need the form.

I'm pissy today sue me.

I never said you needed the form, but those coupons are easily discarded, or just pick up a form pack. Stealing? Maybe... But that's your ethical POV. Maybe your relatives has one for moving into the retirement home. I happen to have a couple of them that wouldn't be so hard to put a stamp on...

I aso gave the suggestion to check retailmenot. Which is free to any one.

There is also the chance of a friend or family member with a tow hitch. Couches are a pain to move, and maybe having that extra person would be helpful in loading/unloading.

A Chrysler mini-van with "Stow & Go" seating will hold a full sized couch in it. I know I have had two in mine at the same time to take to the re upholsterer.

You are pretty nasty for someone who is asking for help, the poster was trying to help you and if you had read her post you would have seen it.

Since this thread is headed nowhere in one big hurry it won't hurt to offer my experience. I have rented small trucks for moving. This is what I have found out. You cannot rent a van, in most cases, for one way travel, but it might be almost as cheap to just rent one for the day and go both directions with it especially if it has no mileage restriction.

Barring that...the two that I have used that have been the most economical have been Budget and Penske. Penske has a smaller truck available 10' but even at its best...it isn't cheap and might be more expensive then the what the couch is worth.

Look for a friend with a pickup since you're from VA, it has been my experience that almost every family has at least one pickup in the group.

I used a 12' Penske truck to move stuff one way from NJ to FL in November. It was $900+ and gas. Mileage was included. Had a AAA discount.

Penske was the cheapest I found, by a lot.
