We found a home we want to rent for our trip this summer. I just read over the contract and it says we can park 3 cars at the home. We have more than 3 cars. Any suggestions on what we can do?

Secondly, the contract also states that if there is a hurricane we are just out our money. Is this normal?

Thanks!

Does the contract say parking for 3 cars maximum or does it state that the rental has parking for 3 cars? The reason that I ask this is because in a lot of the rental homes we have stayed at, have a driveway that will park 3 cars but many of the communities we have stayed at allow you to park on the street as well. Sometimes if you park the three cars up close to the garage area, there is room for one more car to park behind them sideways (blocking in the other cars). It wouldn't hurt to ask the owner if this is allowed.

As for hurricanes and other weather disasters, this is typical language in contracts. We always get trip insurance through www.insuremytrip.com. For all 6 of us, it costs $80 (it covers our flights, lost luggage, the cost of the rental home...) and that way if there is any reason that we can't go, we aren't out the price of the rental.

Good luck.

You need to ask the home owner as there are lots of communities that do not allow parking on the road and the car will be towed away if they do.You should not park on any lawn as this could damage the sprinklers and result in you being charged to repair them.Ask if there is a communal area the extra cars may be parked overnight without penalty or see if the garage is available even if it is being used as a game room as sometimes things can be moved to accommodate one car for a short while .
The hurricane element is usual as owners expect their guests to have some form of insurance in place for their trip.

What plan do you go with for this price? I just priced out insurance on that site for just our rental cost (we drive) for 5 people. The cheapest is $72 but most are well over $100.

We get the Travel Guard Gold plan. We have $2811.20 worth of travel expenses covered (~$303/person for flights $963.20 for our house rental). I looked and it was $87 total. My in-laws tried to get travel insurance it for two of them it was almost the same amount. I think kids are essentially "free" and the age of the adults also affects the price (we are 40 years old).

The contract says that any illegal parking will be towed.

I probably should have mentioned that the house is in Emerald Island. We stayed in the townhouse area before and there was plenty of communal parking there, but you have to have a security code to get into that area.

I'll look into the insurance thing...thanks for your help!

Just be aware that when you buy trip insurance, it does not cover "if for any reason we can't go." It will cover SPECIFIC reasons as to why the trip was cancelled - like loss of a job, death in the family, or major health issue with one of the travellers.

I got trip insurance for a September trip through AAA a couple of years ago and made some comment like, "Well, we're going during hurricane season but at least we're covered." The agent said, "Oh, no, the trip insurance does not cover hurricanes."

As with any insurance policy, it's a good idea to read through it carefully so you know what's covered and what's not.

Are there any companies that cover hurricanes?

Also, anyone stayed at Emerald Island and had to deal with parking?

"Oh, no, the trip insurance does not cover hurricanes."
Most trip insurance policies will cover for this. For example, a recent Travelex policy we purchased includes trip cancellation/interruption coverage for (among other reasons):

Residence of You or Your Traveling Companion, including Your Covered Trip destination accommodations, is rendered uninhabitable due to unforeseen circumstances;

Also, there is no explicit exclusion for hurricanes or other inclement weather here or elsewhere. So, unless the hurricane was forecast at the time you purchased the policy (in which case they could claim it was "foreseen") you would be covered.
